When the episode begins, Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) and Alfred Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee) explore the mansion’s hidden dungeon. The pair come to an electronically controlled door, which Bruce cannot crack. Afterwards, we flash forward a month and see that Leslie Thompkins (Morena Baccarin) and James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) are still together. Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) and Victor Zsasz (Anthony Carrigan) seem to be getting along well.
Barbara Kean (Erin Richards) enters the prison, with Jerome Valeska (Cameron Monaghan) looking on. We’re introduced to a new villain, Zaardon (David Fierro). He is drugged and sent out into the street with a few weapons. Gordon, who is now working as a traffic cop, quickly encounters him and a sword fight ensues. Gordon quickly overcome Zaardon and takes him into custody. Gordon is given a grim warning, before he runs into Edward Nygma (Cory Michael Smith), who insists he has never been better.
After Gordon departs, we see that Nygma is now speaking to his evil, imaginary self. Gordon is ridiculed by Commissioner Loeb (Peter Scolari), who attempts to immediately fire him. Sarah Essen (Zabryna Guevara) tries to cover for him, but fails. Gordon threatens to break the Commissioner, before he exits. Zaardon is shown exhaling smoke in the jail cell. Back at home, Leslie comforts Gordon and insists the firing might be for the best. Jerome speaks to Barbara at the prison. He learns about her crime and tells her about the millionaire, Richard Sionis (Todd Stashwick). Barbara blows him off and gets a friend of her own in Aaron Helzinger (Stink Fisher).
Jerome eventually breaks her shell, by offering a telephone. Butch Gilzean (Drew Powell), Oswald and Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova) speak about business, before Gordon joins them. Gordon requests a favor from Oswald. Oswald agrees to get Commissioner Loeb fired and Gordon his old job back. Oswald demands a small favor in return for his assistance. He requests Gordon to collect a debt from Odgen Barker (Otto Sanchez), but Gordon refuses. Afterwards, Gordon hits the bar, where Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) now works and complains about his predicament.
Next, Gordon pays a visit to Bruce and apologizes for not being able to help find his father’s murderer. He explains the situation and Oswald’s request. Bruce encourages him to help Oswald. After Alfred and Gordon depart, Bruce tries the electronic door again and fails. He bashes the controls with a hammer. Back at the jail, Barbara confronts Richard Sionis and requests the telephone. Gordon confronts Odgen Barker, who refuses to pay.
Gordon bashes everyone and takes the money. A chase ensues, as Gordon flees from Barker and his men. After an encounter in a parking garage, Gordon kills Barker. Back at Wayne Manor, Bruce attempts to convince Alfred to build a bomb to blow the door open. Bruce concludes that he is building the bomb, without or without Alfred. Gordon returns the money to Oswald, who agrees to help. Back at home, Gordon gets a call from Barbara, who insists Leslie is insane and attacked her. Gordon hangs up and ignores her, but she instantly calls back.
Barbara leaves a threatening message. Leslie attempts to convince Gordon to go away and never return, but he refuses. That night, Commissioner Loeb wakes in the night and is confronted by Victor Zsasz and Oswald. Oswald threatens Loeb and demands that he return Gordon’s detective position. Loeb is pushed to his limits and is forced to agree to Oswald’s demands. The next day, Theo Galavan (James Frain) is announced as Chairman of Development of Gotham. At the prison, Barbara has become good friends with everyone.
Zaardon joins the group at the prison and talks craziness, before he begins to choke and exhale smoke. Everyone passes out, before Tabitha Galavan (Jessica Lucas) enters and kills the guards. Essen is promoted and Gordon receives his position back. Gordon quickly learns about the Gotham Asylum and Barbara’s escape. Theo and his sister, Tabitha, line up the villains and tells them about his plans. He suggests that they all work together as a team.
Richard Sionis attempts to refuse the offer and offers up money. It fails and Tabitha kills him. Meanwhile, Alfred sets the bomb and Bruce blows it up. With the door open, they explore the hidden room. They discover a computer and a letter written to Bruce. Bruce reads the letter from his father and learns about his father’s concerns for the family business. It also speaks about his true calling and the episode ends.
Gotham Review
Overall, the episode was decent, although it felt a little too long. At times, it seems like the show has too many unneeded characters. Oswald and Victor working together is great and the few minutes we saw Nygma were interesting. A decent episode, which deserves a 6.5 out of 10.
