Gotham: Beasts of Prey Review

At the beginning of Gotham: Beasts of Prey, Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) attempts to make her escape. Outside, she is introduced to the man, who catches the escapees. Back in Gotham, James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) enjoys a drink with Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz), who questions him about the police union. Gordon questions about Alfred’s real attacker, but Bruce refuses to give up any information. At the police station, Gordon receive credit for his actions from Officer Len Moore (Brendan Griffin). The pair discuss a homicide and Moore requests Gordon take over the case. After he agrees to take over, he pays a visit to Dr. Leslie Thompkins (Morena Baccarin).

Before they’re able to head to dinner, they discuss the homicide of Grace Fairchild (Willa Fitzgerald). Leslie reveals Grace was last seen in her area, before she mentions the presence of speakeasies in the vicinity. Meanwhile, Fish tells Kelly (Dashiell Eaves) that she is ready to make her escape or die trying. Alfred Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee) attempts to visit the city, before he begins to bleed from his wound and changes his mind. Meanwhile, Cobblepot speaks with Lidia Bicchieri (Barbara Rosenblat) and attempts to buy her establishment.

Lidia describes her granddaughter, Antonia (Desi Oakley), who has been shaking up with a guitar player. Oswald agrees to help bring her back. Meanwhile, Gordon attempts to get help from Harvey investigating the crime, before Nygma enters and provides Gordon with a list of the drinking establishments in the area. Nygma is tasked with finding a missing piece of evidence, before he retreats. Fish begins recruiting allies for her escape. Gordon and Bullock interview a bartender, who discusses Grace’s visit to the bar. Through a flashback, we see Grace speaking with Jason Lennon (Milo Ventimiglia), who speaks about his search for unconditional love.

The couple return to Lennon’s place, where he has a 50 Shades of Grey setup. Meanwhile, Bruce goes on an adventure through town and stops at a gun range. At the same time, Oswald and Gabe take care of Antonia’s boyfriend. Leslie tells Gordon and Harvey about Grace’s autopsy, which shows no signs of abuse, despite being missing for four months. A flashback shows Jason refusing to allow Grace to leave. Next, Fish manages to steal the boat keys, but gets caught in the process. She is forced to make up a lie, in order to keep herself out of trouble. After a few threats, the doctor allows Fish to leave.

Meanwhile, Bruce runs into Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova) and questions her about Reggie Payne. Oswald returns to the bar and speaks to Lidia about the club. Nygma shows Harvey and Gordon a painting, which was left at the crime scene. Harvey insists the killer is a professional and has killed before. A flashback shows Jason Lennon, aka The Ogre, get angry at Grace, before he takes her to his sexual dungeon. Oswald finally reveals his reason for purchasing the club. He wishes to kill Don Maroni there. Fish returns to her comrades and insists it is time.

Fish sends her men out, while she goes back for Kelly. On her way back, she is captured by the doctor, but the prisoners escapes and dispose of him. As it turns out, Fish lied to the other men and set them up to get captured. Instead, she makes it to helicopter with the others and admits she knows how to fly, while the other guys are killed. As the copter flies away, Fish gets shot in the stomach. Meanwhile, Harvey tells Gordon that the killer leaves the heart picture at all of his crime scenes. He reveals that the Ogre kills the family of those, who investigate his crimes.

Selina and Bruce track down Reggie. He insists he meant no harm, but Alfred caught him stealing documents, which forced his hand. Reggie provides Bruce with the names, but suggests Bruce stay away. When he attempts to retrieve his drugs, Bruce tries to push Reggie out of the window, but Selina ends up finishing the job. Meanwhile, Len admits Loeb ordered him to pass the case to Gordon. Afterwards, Gordon contemplates his chances and Leslie’s safety. Gordon confronts Commissioner Loeb (Peter Scolari) and insists he’ll get Ogre, before bringing down Loeb.

Review

Gotham hasn’t been on in such a longer period of time, it is difficult to make heads of tails of things. Ultimately, it feels like the 20+ episodes a season is simply too much. The episode wasn’t particular good, nor exceptionally bad. It was just bland and will likely be unmemorable. Sure, Fish Mooney made her escape, but does anyone care at this point? Reggie’s death at Selina’s hands sadly fell flat, as well. The Ogre is somewhat of a bore, which we’ve seen innumerable times before. With that, a 6 out of 10 is suitable for the episode.
