Korfball – The episode begins with Colonel Patrick Quinn (Denis Leary) and Major Abraham Shah (Danny Pedi) playing basketball when Jan (Arnmundur Ernst Bjornsson) shows up and offers to introduce them to a real game. Seconds later they are watching what is referred to as korfball. After a bit of Jan insulting America, this leads to Quinn challenging Jan to a game of Americans VS the Dutch on Saturday.
While studying a video on Korfball, Quinn calls Captain Maggie Quinn (Taylor Misiak) and Sergeant Dana Conway (Laci Mosley) into his office to tell them that they are going to be on his Korfball team this coming Saturday.
Sometime later, Katja Vanderhoff (Catherine Tate) shows up at the base to tell Quinn that everyone in town is talking about the Korfball game. While Quinn invites Katja back to his place, Shah tries to learn to play korfball.
When Maggie, Quinn, Dana, and Shah get together to practice, Maggie exhibits the attitude of playing just to have fun. Quinn tells her that he knows she is just half pretending to get on his nerves because The Rocket would never embrace losing. Maggie later visits Shah to ask how Quinn knew about her old high school basketball nickname. He tells her that her mother used to send him newspaper clippings of her games. Maggie tells him that she buried The Rocket a long time ago but is later shown going to her office and getting her old jersey out.
On their second date, Katja tells Quinn that she has to cancel their plans for Saturday night because she has been asked to speak at a seminar. She will, however, be there to cheer him and Bram (Peter Eberst) on for the game. Quinn is obviously jealous of Bram and tries to learn more but only learns that he is very tall and is the town baker.
The Rocket shows up at practice the following day and Quinn absolutely loves it. The Rocket also shows up at a tape review and no one likes it but Quinn. Later that evening after the rest of the team goes home Maggie and Corporal Papadakis (Hal Cumpston) stay behind to review more tapes. It is during the session that Maggie realizes she has a ringer on her hands.
On the day of the game, Maggie finds out about Conway’s betting on the game and benches her. Maggie also benches Shah after he tells her it is nice to see her bonding with her father but the team misses the old Captain Maggie. At the half, the US is up 13 to nothing and they aren’t exactly gracious about it. During the half, Katja lets Quinn know that she isn’t happy with his team’s antics. Maggie realizes what she has turned into after she makes the korf boy cry,
Things do not go so well in the US’s locker room after Maggie realizes that she is turning into Quinn. This leads to the team deciding to lose and surprisingly enough, Quinn agrees in order to impress Katja. After the half, the US tries to throw the game to the Dutch but things do not go so well. This is until Papadakis joins the Dutch. With six seconds left, the two teams are tied at thirteen. Maggie fouls the pregnant lady so that she gets a foul shot. She sinks it.
Two days later, Maggie drops by Quinn’s office and notices that he has the newspaper clipping of her fouling the pregnant lady posted on his wall. The episode ends with Bram, Quinn, and Katja at dinner. Bram ends up getting up and walking out because the whole thing is so weird. Quinn is happy because he yet again wins at something else.
Going Dutch Review
This wasn’t a horrible episode. I really enjoyed the competitive nature of the episode and learning about korfball was exciting. I could only imagine how it would be more challenging than basketball. I was surprised that it was a real sport but I looked it up and it was. I also enjoyed seeing Maggie turn into Quinn for a bit. It was kind of refreshing. Who knew Papadakis would be such a good shot? I’d have to give the episode a 5.5 out of 10.
