Get Millie Black Series 1 Episode 3 Recap

Curtis Get Millie Black Channel 4 HBO

Holborn – As the third episode of Get Millie Black begins, viewers learn more about Luke Holborn (Joe Dempsie) who grew up hungry. He says he had everything, but there’s one thing people with everything never have. Luke says that’s enough. He calls Freddie Somerville (Peter John Thwaites) to say he’s heading up the investigation into Sanguis Meridian. Holborn’s call to Freddie brought him to Kingston. He thought the trip could mean big things until he met Millie. After the intro, Millie-Jean Black (Tamara Lawrance) asks why a photo of Romeo Lawrence is on Leddick’s phone.  She thinks Leddick (Paul Issa) was deeply involved in Romeo’s abduction. Lance Stennet (Christopher Daley) doubts the press will care about that. Barracat (Belinda Reid) is told The Gleaner is on line one looking for a comment and the commissioner is on line two.

Luke says Freddie claimed he had information that the Somervilles were helping to launder money for Sanguis. He goes on to say they’ve been following the gang for months and nothing ties this kid to them. Luke tells Barracat that they need Freddie alive. He thinks he and Millie should partner on the case. In private, Barracat tells Millie to tie Freddie to a crime committed on Jamaican soil and she’ll hold him until they find Romeo. Millie is adamant she’ll find Freddie and Janet. Later, Millie receives a call from Meera Thakur (Anjli Mohindra) who says Luke Holborn looks kosher. Millie isn’t happy to be partnering with a Met officer. She goes home where Hibiscus (Chyna McQueen) is sleeping on the couch. Freddie and Janet (Shernet Swearine) are taken somewhere they can hide out. Hit Girl (Dorothy ‘Patra’ Smith) tells Freddie that Janet saved his backside. Rixton (O’Daine Clarke) is nearby.

When they get into an argument, Freddie begins choking Hit Girl. He reminds her that Pinky is on Somerville property and she doesn’t even have a proper lease. Hit Girl offers to get him a boat to Cuba if he signs the deed of Pinky over to her. Hit Girl warns him there’s a hit out on him and even Babylon is closing in. Luke tells Millie he hopes the Somerville lawyer is a real lead. The receptionist says Mr. Heywood was shaken up today so he suspects their visit is about the Somerville murders. He says Barrington Heywood left at the crack of dawn. Millie and Luke rush to his office and find it on fire. Luke calls for help while Millie struts inside with her gun. She tries to find evidence but ends up dying. After receiving medical care, Millie gets her gun back. Millie asks about the hard drive, but it’s too early to say whether it’s damaged. Millie hopes Luke didn’t give her mouth-to-mouth. Luke says he put out an APB on Heywood.

She stumbles around and almost falls while Luke tries to talk some sense into her. Instead of going to the hospital, Millie wants to go eat chicken. Millie talks about the pictures on Heywood’s wall. They include politician Clint Donovan, NTK bank owner Patterson Campbell, and Leddick Somerville. Millie calls Curtis to see if he’s been released from the hospital. She tells him about the hard drive. Millie leaves Luke who is told to get a cab. Curtis (Gershwyn Eustance Jnr) tells Daniel (Jomo Dixon) that Millie needs a favor. Curtis asks him to stop by salvage when he goes to work. Daniel talks about going to Vancouver for a holiday. He reminds Curtis that no one showed up at the hospital. Daniel thinks they should go to Vancouver to live their lives out in the open. He believes Millie came to the hospital with her hand out as usual. Millie returns to Hibiscus who takes care of her injuries.

Hibiscus mentions she has to join Deltreece (Shaunak Antonia Wilson) for the Nine Night. Millie wants to make sure she’s coming back. Hibiscus insists she can’t come back to this house because the Gully is her home. Millie drops her off later that night. She says she’ll be okay because she has her work and Curtis will come through. Once Millie is alone, she calls someone to see if they want to meet her partner properly this time. Daniel finds out that Millie invited herself and her boyfriend over at the last minute. Curtis asks him to behave. Millie arrives with Richie (Derrick Levy). At one point, Curtis asks Millie about the Brit. Richie mentions that Luke saved her from a fire. Millie asks about the hard drive. Curtis says he’s working on it. They talk about Richie’s bar. Hibiscus hangs out with the others in the Gully. Barracat scolds Millie for breaking protocol and jeopardizing her career. Millie says Curtis found a string of accounts, shell companies, and flight info.

Barracat blames Millie for Curtis getting shot. She believes Millie can find Romeo but not if they’re fired. Next, Millie and Luke go to the Norman Manley International Airport. While there, Luke says Heywood flew to the Virgin Islands to empty his accounts. Millie says he’s traveling to Venezuela. She believes they might have a chance of intercepting Freddie if he’s booked a flight. Millie wags the paper in front of the receptionist so she can see if any of the companies on the list have purchased tickets. They learn that Blue Ridge Holdings and Somertime Tours bought tickets. The receptionist says all of the companies are showing up as having made recent purchases. Millie asks her to print the scans of the passports for the international flights. While they wait, Luke tells Millie why he has two phones. They look at the passport photos. Millie notices one for Anthony Mantel and realizes it has Romeo’s picture.

At the station, Millie tells Barracat that Romeo flew from Kingston to London ten days ago. The flight was paid for by Clear Fields Foundation. There is another for Sharon Ortez who was found dead in London two years ago. Joy Applegate is in prison for theft at HMP Downview in Surrey. She’s awaiting deportation to Jamaica. Her brother, Leon Douglas, is still missing. Remi Taveres was found beaten to death in Hackney Marshes. Romeo is the only one who used an alias. Barracat says the slave trade didn’t end. It just evolved. Millie says she’ll visit the Lawrences. Romeo Senior (Mikhail Johns) wants her to go to London and find him. Shirley (Shanice McCatty) says they told her not to call and to let him settle. Back in the car, Millie says she wants to tell Curtis. Luke confesses he had them send him the report of the one they did after Victor Adebanjo. He wanted to know who he was working with.

Luke believes she did everything right. Millie wants to make sure they don’t lose Romeo. She goes inside without Luke. Hit Girl learns that Janet and Freddie are on their way to the harbor. Rixton tells her she has the deed to go with all of this now. Hit Girl worries that Freddie will come back and cause trouble. She will make sure Freddie gets what he deserves. Curtis remembers the missing persons. Hit Girl calls Millie to tell her where Freddie and Janet are going. Millie rushes out to join Luke so they can catch Freddie and Janet. Luke tells her not to call it in because they don’t want to lose their chance. Curtis calls about the operation to bring in Freddie. He worries that Millie is going to get someone killed. Daniel tries to prevent him from going. Curtis calls someone to ask how close they are to the harbor.

Millie and Luke search the harbor. They find them on dock 40. When Millie approaches, Freddie pulls a gun on her. Freddie says he’s the good guy and said no to the little boy. Luke sees Lance Stennet pull up with a gun. Janet tells Freddie to shoot Millie who offers to call Luke. Freddie questions who she thinks he’s running from. Stennet calls for backup. Freddie tells Millie that Luke is a part of them. As soon as he talked to Luke, his life was turned upside down. Luke tries to get Lance to shoot Freddie. He threatens to tell the entire JPF that he had the shot and didn’t take it. Freddie mentions Ahmed. Lance eventually takes the shot. Luke admits he’s another shadow at Millie’s door. He’s shown cleaning up the Somerville scene and choking Leddick to death. Millie arrives and Luke says he needs to phone this into the Met.

Get Millie Black Review

Get Millie Black had the potential to be a gripping crime drama set in Jamaica. Unfortunately, it really falters in a few key areas that make it difficult to enjoy. For starters, the storytelling is pretty chaotic and messy making it difficult to always tell exactly what is going on. The personal dramas often consume more of the episodes than the actual crimes. The focus of the crimes seems to change on a whim shifting from Janet to Freddie to Romeo and so on.

Sadly, the series feels like it’s a few British leads running around Jamaica pretending to be Jamaicans. The script doesn’t work as well as it could’ve because so much of it is so dumb. This episode had multiple scenes that would require a lot of effort to fully accept.

As an example, Luke and Millie learned that Heywood had left at the crack of dawn. When they reached his office, the fire was pretty small. If he had started the fire, that building would’ve been rubble. Then, we have the constant heroic figure of Millie running inside while Luke stands around doing nothing except some narration that would’ve been better left out.

That could’ve worked if Millie didn’t almost get herself killed again. How many times do we have to put up with Millie’s stupid antics before she pays the price instead of someone else like Curtis? Instead of going to the hospital for a checkup, Millie decides they should get some chicken instead. You really can’t make up how stupid this is.

Anyone with a moderate IQ would’ve realized already that Luke Holborn was corrupt. He had to be because that fits the tiresome agenda of the series which has been overwhelming from the start. Sadly, Luke is still more likable than Millie who is just rude to everyone she encounters. It’s really no surprise that no one is watching Get Millie Black considering the lead character is so easy to dislike. The only sympathetic character here is Daniel who detailed some hard truths throughout the episode.

It’s no longer about being eager to find out how it ends. It’s more about just getting to the finish line and breathing a sigh of relief. This episode scores a 4 out of 10. Recaps of Get Millie Black can be found here.
