As the episode begins, Anne Lister (Suranne Jones) and Ann meet with Mrs. Rawson (Lucy Briers) and Delia Rawson (Daisy Edgar-Jones). They offer to visit Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle) at a later time. Ann agree, but they decide to stay anyway. They speak about the visit to the Lake District and Anne showing up unexpectedly. After the intro, John Booth (Thomas Howes) decides to propose to Eugenie (Albane Courtois). He gets help from Elizabeth (Rosie Cavaliero). After a little back and forth with the translator, Eugenie agrees to marry him. Next, Anne takes Ann to the building she built for them. They get romantic and begin making out on the couch. Booth pleads with Marian (Gemma Whelan) to tell Anne about the marriage.
Anne takes Ann home. She asks her to pay a formal visit to her aunt. Ann agree to do so and invites her to stay over all night. Marian and the others are mad that Anne stayed out so late. She learns that the aunt has been having stomach issues. Anne speaks with her aunt. She tells her about her feelings for Ann. Elizabeth tells Eugenie about the family. The servants serve breakfast while Marian argues with Anne. The conversation becomes more and more heated. Marian eventually decides to move out and find a husband. Anne visits the workers. She speaks with Mr. Pickels (Steve Evets). Together they deal with Sam Sowden (Anthony Flanagan) who is drunk. Thomas (Tom Lewis) becomes angry with his father.
Thomas and Dick (Felix Johnson) take Sam and the cart home. Before they can leave, Sam ticks off Anne. She tells him to meet with her later. Next, Anne chats with Jeremiah Rawson (Shaun Dooley). He agrees to pay the amount that she has offered. At home, Mary Sowden (Lucy Black) learns about Sam’s troubles. Thomas wants to take the cart back. That results in a fight. Eventually, Sam is overwhelmed and tied up. He is put in the pig pen. Anne and Ann get frisky at the new cabin once again. Anne learns that someone sent her friend an anonymous letter. It badmouths Anne. Marian moves out of the house. She tells her aunt about the new man in her life. She also wants her to tell Anne about Booth’s marriage.
Ann promises that the contents of the letter are not going to change her mind. Anne learns a rumor that Rawson might have been driving the cart that caused the boy to lose his leg. Christopher Rawson (Vincent Franklin) meets with his brother. He learns that Anne has been playing games with them. The Rawson brothers are not happy. Sam encourages Thomas to untie him. After all, he has to meet with Anne. Thomas refuses. Anne tells her family where she is going to be before visiting Ann. That night, Anne asks Ann if she would like to live together. Ann is interested, but she doesn’t give a definite answer. John Booth visits William (Peter Davison) and Eliza Priestley (Amelia Bullmore). He believes Anne is there. This tells William and Eliza that Anne has been spending a lot of time with Ann.
Anne takes things further with Ann. Ann stops her because she is not ready for that yet. John arrives. Anne asks him about his marriage. She isn’t happy, but isn’t interested in standing in the way of happiness either. John tells her about his visit to the Priestley house. Thomas tries to talk sense into his father. It doesn’t help. Sam is just as mad as ever. Anne learns about Marian new male friend. She doesn’t want them marrying. Jeremy (Timothy West) doesn’t think it is such a bad idea. Eliza decides to visit Ann. Anne speaks with Thomas. He tries to take over the contract, but Anne still wants to work with Sam. Thomas leaves work early to deal with him. Anne returns to Ann, who is distraught. She is worried that Anne wouldn’t come back.
Thomas gets his mom and siblings away from the house. Then, he goes inside and grabs a knife. He prepares to cut his father loose. Sam falls face first into the pig pen. Thomas cuts his throat and leaves him for the pigs. Eliza arrives at Ann’s house. Inside, Ann and Anne are getting naughty. Eliza catches them in the act. She tells them they’re playing with fire. Ann begins laughing when she leaves. Then, she invites Anne to come upstairs with her. The episode ends with Ann telling Anne that she loves her.
Gentleman Jack Review
I find Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle to be fascinating in this series. Their chemistry is really off the charts. However, I am beginning to wonder whether or not Ann is playing games as well. Thomas finally dealt with his father. Will he be able to convince Anne to work with him? Will he escape justice for his heroic deed? I am also interested in seeing where things go with the Rawson brothers. They’re obviously stealing coal. How will they attempt to deal with Anne?
I can’t wait to find out the answers. The episode scores an 8 out of 10. Catch up with previous recaps of Gentleman Jack right now!
