Liar – The episode begins with Birdie Bell’s (Asher Keddie) flight landing. The first thing she does is check to see if Joe Burt (David Wenham) has texted her. He has not. Seconds later, she is telling Anton (Nicholas Brown) all about Joe’s predicament. She promises that he will be there tomorrow.
When Birdie and Anton arrive at the location of the wedding, everyone asks where Joe is. Birdie tells them he will be there tomorrow. Despite Birdie promising Margeaux (Heather Mitchell) the guest house, Kath Tovey (Janet Andrewartha) insists on giving it to Birdie and Joe. Kath asks Birdie if he and Joe are in love. Birdie tells her yes.
Not long after this, Margeaux shows up and tells Birdie that she told Kath the couple should have the guest house. Birdie apologizes for sending her to the bank. When Birdie is alone, she tries calling Joe but doesn’t get him.
While Joe is shown receiving Birdie’s text messages, one of the guests gives a speech about those who couldn’t make it. Not long into the speech, a surprise couple shows up. Later that day, Don asks Birdie about the property Joe is bidding on. When she tells him about it, he recognizes it as the old Tara Estate. She doesn’t believe him and tells him that it is the El Dorado Estate. Later that night, Birdie tries calling Joe again but gets his voicemail.
Birdie tries calling Joe yet again the following morning. Joe is briefly shown driving. Jessa (Petra Yared) tells Birdie that she hears he’s marrying a bazillionaire and buying a mansion. She tells Birdie that she is thinking about trying for a baby and moving back to Melbourne. Margeaux buts in and says they are all looking forward to Joe’s arrival. Kath tells Birdie that she will be sending Don to the airport at 1 to pick Joe up. Later that day, Don shows Birdie an article about the Tara Estate. She once again denies it being the same place but says that she is going to take a quick shower and rushes off. After failing to ring Joe, she calls the Tara Estate Agent and learns that the Tara Estate did not go back on the market and is not currently for sale.
Don asks Birdie to help with Rory’s (Annemieke Kadmenec) braids. Birdie tells him that Joe’s son fell at the pool, hit his head, and had to get stitches. She asks him to keep it to himself. He promises that he will. Not long after this, the wedding takes place and Rory reads her speech. Birdie finally receives a message from Joe, telling her that he needs to get things right with his children, and he needs some time alone. She asks him if he is breaking up with her. Birdie insists on changing seats at the dinner.
During the dinner, Anton asks Birdie how long she is going to keep letting this go on with Joe. She tells him that there will be a good explanation. She asks him if they can deal with it tomorrow. Birdie leaves the dinner and returns to the guest house, where she briefly looks over her speech. She then checks her texts and finds a message from Susan, telling her that her friend Kirsty (Ming-Zhu Hii) dated Joe. Birdie then goes on social media to look at Kirsty’s photos and sees her with Joe. This causes her to break down.
Birdie shows up right before Anton gives his speech about love. This causes Birdie to reflect on when Joe told her that he loved her. She doesn’t get long to reflect because she is soon called on to give a speech. She reflects on the time that Anton told her that he had found the one. Birdie spends the rest of the night drinking and dancing. At one point, she gets so drunk that she hears her mother nagging at her.
Birdie wakes the following morning and finds Joe joking around at the party with the guests. He kisses and hugs her, but she doesn’t know what to say. They end up leaving the party together and in the car on the way home, Joe tells Birdie that he wants to ask her something when they get back.
When they get back to Birdie’s apartment, the episode ends with her slamming the door in Joe’s face.
Fake Review
So, Joe thought he was going to get away with ignoring Birdie for 24 hours? She is pretty naïve, but she isn’t that naïve. He must not have been that great of a conman if he was dating someone, a friend of a friend of hers. On top of that, he let her share pictures of them all across social media. For the episode, I didn’t think it was that bad, especially compared to the last one. I kind of actually enjoyed this one, and what a fool Birdie made out of herself. Things would have been even better if Joe hadn’t shown up. I’d give this one a 6 out of 10.
