Masturbation Is Important – As this episode of Dying For Sex begins, Molly Kochan (Michelle Williams) has questions after leaving Steve (Jay Duplass). She tells Nikki Boyer (Jenny Slate) that she just wants to be touched by someone who wants to touch her. Molly insists this is good. She begins paying attention to the men on the street, including one making sexual motions toward her. Molly ends up sleeping in the same bed as Nikki and Noah (Kelvin Yu). She gets up and begins creating a profile on an app. She calls Steve who hopes she realizes Nikki won’t be able to take care of her. Steve claims Nikki only likes her because she never calls her out on anything. In the middle of their conversation, Molly receives a penis picture on the dating app. When she tells Steve about the dating app, he argues that she can’t do that. He insists Nikki won’t be able to take care of her. The next day, Nikki goes to the hospital with Molly.
Molly doesn’t want this to mess up her life or make her late for her rehearsal. Molly receives another picture on the app. Then, Dr. Pankowitz (David Rasche) tells Molly that she has bone metastasis in her pelvic region. As he talks about the treatment, Molly thinks about getting up and walking out. The doctor says his mission is to extend her life for as long as possible. He says they’ll start by doing some follow-up diagnostics. She’ll also need a full-body scan. The doctor explains they’re going to begin monthly shots of leuprolide to lower estrogen production and cause her to go into menopause. Dr. Pankowitz goes through the symptoms Molly should expect including decreased libido. Nikki says that isn’t going to work with Molly’s goals. Molly tries to focus on the pictures coming to the app. Molly eventually asks when she’s going to die. The doctor can’t say because the research is changing and each case is different.
However, Dr. Pankowitz says the five-year survival rate is around 30%. He urges her to get the scan so they can get her into menopause. Nikki speaks to the receptionist who tells her about the app called MyChart. Molly reminds Nikki she has rehearsal. Molly needs to call Steve to get the things she needs. The doctor brings Nikki’s laptop since she left it. He talks to Molly about Steve being gone. Molly receives a message confirming her PET/CT scan has been scheduled for 3. She realizes she doesn’t have time so she contacts one of the men from the app. Molly checks into a motel so she can have sex with a guy named Jason R. When she sees a man enter, she quickly runs in the other direction. Then, she notices a man on the elevator. She invites him to come up to her room. When Molly gets out of the elevator, she says she changed her mind. She goes to her room and humps her pillow.
She masturbates while thinking about the man on the elevator. Steve speaks to Nikki and suggests she lost Molly. He gives Nikki the stuff and tells her about the CD which has medical records for four years. Steve isn’t convinced she can do it. He warns Nikki that she’ll have to be there all the time and she’ll have to watch her in pain. Steve asks why he has a charge for $1,000 on his card for a motel in midtown and $200 for some kind of sexual toy store. Meanwhile, Molly experiments with a vibrator. She continues while watching Speed with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. Molly and a man masturbate on livestream. Then, they talk about his mom who is possibly going to be put in a nursing home. Nikki messages Molly asking where she is. Molly receives a message that surprises her. At the hospital, Nikki pleads with Carla to hold the appointment because Molly is on her way.
Nikki learns she lost the CD when she has to schedule another appointment. Molly finally gets in touch with Nikki and tells her she clicked a bad link on her laptop. Molly says someone has a video of her masturbating. Nikki finally finds her at the motel. Molly tells her what she’s been doing all day. Nikki admits she lost her records. She urges Molly not to call Steve. The hacker threatens to release Molly’s video if they don’t give them money. Molly ends up returning to Steve who says coming back was the right decision. Molly insists she’s not back. Steve wants her to have whatever she wants even if that means masturbating with men online. He thinks the photo is disgusting. Molly quickly regrets calling him. She tells him she’s not going to call him again. Molly says they don’t need to get divorced and she doesn’t want anything from him. She’ll liquidate her 401k since they know she’s not going to get old. Steve agrees to let Molly stay on his insurance.
Molly questions whether they even know each other. Steve thinks they do. When Molly catches up with Nikki, she learns that Nikki found the CD. Molly brought all her stuff since she moved out. Nikki says her Aunt Pearl told her she had the best sex of her life during menopause. A man nearby makes eye contact with Molly and begins speaking to her. Nikki leaves them together. Molly ends up in a cab with the man. They end up kissing. Before they can do anything, the man prematurely ejaculates. They get kicked out of the car.
Dying For Sex Review
The second episode of Dying For Sex had some good points, especially with all the medical stuff and the inefficiencies of the system. The show easily could’ve expanded on these things and made stronger points. The potential is certainly here for this to get deeply emotional as the story progresses.
However, it’s hard not to feel like the whole thing is a bit stupid at times. It’s very rare that shows ever take serious subject matter seriously for whatever reason. The series is making good points at times and the content is tough, but it feels like the silly bits are taking up so much of the screen time.
Poor Steve seems like the sanest of the bunch at the moment while Molly and Nikki are just too far over-the-top. If viewers can enjoy the humor of the series, they may not feel so sour about the whole thing though. However, the story could’ve been covered more seriously even if Molly’s goal was to get laid.
Another issue here is the constant inner monologue amid dialogue from other characters. It’s unfortunate, but stupid is the only way to describe this thing right now. This episode scores a 4.5 out of 10. Recaps of Dying For Sex can be found here. Find out how to support our independent site at this link.
