Dope Girls Series 1 Episode 4 Recap

Behold The Stars – As the fourth episode of Dope Girls begins, Billie Cassidy (Umi Myers) spirals as she thinks about everything that has happened. When Billie gets up, Eddie Cobb (Michael Duke) speaks to her. Kate Galloway (Julianne Nicholson) asks Evie (Eilidh Fisher) to clean the flat today. Evie doesn’t know what happened last night, but she asks her mom to stop taking it out on her. Kate asks Billie whether Reggie (Jordan Kouame) stayed over. Billie admits she didn’t expect Kate to still be there. Kate goes to the club and looks at the aftermath of last night. Sergeant Frank Turner (Ian Bonar) is questioned about the recent crimes on his patch. His boss, Commissioner J. Campbell, questions whether he’s distracted by something or someone. Turner is warned that other men and even a woman could do his job now. When Turner learns, he gets a message from the school saying her mother picked her up and took her to church.

He rushes out of the building. Turner makes it to the church where he finds his daughter with Isabella Salucci (Geraldine James). Isabella says she’s learned his daughter has been having a bit of trouble at school with bullies. They’ve been making a plan to attack. Damaso (Dustin Demri-Burns) and Isabella mention Silvio. Turner promises to find him. Isabella says it would be a shame if the years of schooling they paid for went to waste. At the pub, Kate hides a gun. Violet Davies (Eliza Scanlen) arrives early to help with the cleanup. While she’s there, Violet tries to find out more about Kate. She mentions that she heard Silvio Salucci went missing. Violet asks about her husband. Kate says he’s gone. Violet thanks her for last night. Kate believes Violet looks familiar, but she can’t remember where she’s seen her. Reggie checks on Billie who thought he’d never wake up. They have sex. Billie says she doesn’t want to have a baby.

When she goes out, she finds a poster for a show starring Evelyn Starling. Billie gets a phonograph machine and takes it to the club. When they’re not looking, Violet finds the gun Kate hid earlier. In private, Kate and Billie talk about pulling together. Billie won’t sit by and let them turn this place into another Danton’s. Kate says they need to be more professional and make their own rules. Billie asks about money and booze. She warns Kate she has no idea what the Salucci family is capable of. Kate goes to the House of Salucci to speak to Damaso. He shows her around and says they pride themselves on making the finest leather in England. Then, they begin discussing business. The Salucci family wants payment every Friday. Kate asks what she’ll get in return. Damaso says she’ll keep her safe. Kate asks how she’s supposed to reopen when they destroyed her stock last night. It’s his problem if he wants to make money. Kate wants Damaso to loan her some alcohol.

She says he should make an exception because her club is going to be the best in London. Damaso asks what makes her club so special. Kate claims she does. Damaso relents and agrees to loan her the alcohol, but she’ll have to pay back the cost plus 50%. They settle on 40%. Kate says they won’t be selling any dope at the club. Luca (Rory Fleck Byrne) believes Kate is Damaso’s charity case. Evie cleans up at the flat. She eventually leaves and visits Silas Huxley (Nabhaan Rizwan). Silas asks if she’s got the things he asked for. Meanwhile, Kate and the others work to get the club fixed. Billie steps out for a drink. She’s asked if she’s going to go to the audition for the movie that everyone is talking about. Eddie’s boyfriend, Walter Daniels (Samson Ajewole), says he told Eddie to tell her about it. Billie speaks to Eddie about it. Eddie insists running away isn’t the answer to her problems. Billie says it’s about herself and not Kate. Lily Lee (Priya Kansara) tells Violet she believes Kate is cursed.

Some people carry a shadow on their back and Lily can see it with Kate. Evie tells Silas that she just wants to know her father loves her. Silas believes he hid his pain to protect Evie and he loved her. Evie argues he left her. Silas tells Evie how he felt at the time of their daughter’s passing. He thinks it’s time Evie goes home. Silas says his sessions are limited in capacity and expensive. At the pub, Reggie tells the other there’s a policeman there and he wants to speak to the owner. Turner enters and speaks to Kate. He learns that she’s working with the Salucci family. Turner believes she’s fearless to be running a place like that. He thinks he saw Eddie sitting on another man’s lap at the café. Turner suggests Eddie should come with him. Violet interrupts and mentions that Turner likes menstrual blood all over his face. Turner takes Violet and says he doesn’t have time to sit around and wait for her. He urges her to help find out what happened to the Salucci boy. Turner removes the handcuffs and tells Violet he’s counting on her.

Later, Eddie tells Kate that Billie believed her when she said things would be different there. Kate claims it will be different in time. Damaso comes over to speak to Kate. Outside, Violet attacks Luca because he’s being rough with Lily. She knocks him down and takes his gun. Lily urges her to put it down since it’s a Salucci gun.

Lily says they need to go. She doesn’t think Luca will remember them since he’s wasted. Damaso tells Kate she made decent money tonight. She mentions his brother. Damaso questions what she wants him to do. He says he should be looking for his son and running his family instead of being stuck with his rabid brother. Damaso explains that his son has gone missing. He’s a hothead like his uncle. After Damaso’s wife died, he raised Silvio on his own. Damaso takes Luca home. Kate yells for everyone to get out. In the middle of the night, Violet sneaks into The 33 and retrieves the gun. She suspects it could belong to Silvio Salucci.

Dope Girls Review

The fourth episode of Dope Girls was interesting although nothing groundbreaking. While there are comparisons to Peaky Blinders, this really has a lot more in common with Harlots. The primary difference is that the series is trying to be gritty and serious while Harlots usually did not.

At the very least, the series has developed villains and possibly sympathetic characters. Some of the storylines are moderately interesting although others will probably be predictable in the end. The series is watchable although it may not deliver anything memorable or purposeful overall.

The performances are good throughout. It’d be nice if the Salucci storyline moved forward a bit quicker because this may never reach a satisfying conclusion before it gets canceled. There is potential with Damaso and Kate although Luca is going to be a major obstacle. The truth about Silvio will also create issues there.

This episode scores a 6 out of 10. Recaps of Dope Girls can be found here. Find out how to support our independent site at this link. Learn more about advertising with us here. Join the discussion here.
