Domino Day Series 1 Episode 1 Recap

domino day tv series 1 episode 1

As the opening episode of Domino Day begins, Domino (Siena Kelly) gets ready in the bathroom. When she sits at the bar, Leon (Percelle Ascott) offers her a free drink since he believes she has been stood up. He questions what made her want to swipe right on this guy. Leon keeps making her laugh before saying he is a fool to stand her up. Jason eventually arrives and begins ordering drinks for himself and Domino. They begin talking about their careers as Domino reveals she is a nail technician. Jason tells Domino he is into her before saying her skin is so sexy. They agree to get out of there. They leave and get a drink in private.

Domino joins him in the bedroom as he begins taking off his shirt. Jason begins taking control until Domino flips him over and jumps on top of him. It appears she takes his power. Once she finishes, she uses a spell of sorts to make Jason forget her name. Domino blocks Jason’s profile from the dating app. At home, she has a nightmare. Domino remembers a man telling her he found a spell that she can do. He also says her secret is safe. At The Secret Root, two women talk about a lone witch in Manchester. Sammie (Babirye Bukilwa) talks about seeing Domino’s aura. She suspects she may be hiding something. Kat (Alisha Bailey) asks if she thinks Domino did something to him. Kat says she’ll have to alert The Elders as coven leader.

Domino works as a barrister at a coffee place. Jason (Jonah Rzeskiewicz) wakes up when he gets a call from his coworker Mike (Christopher Jeffers). Jason asks him to tell the boss lady he is sick. Mike wants a video of Jason’s recent date. Jason watches the video on his tablet and finds out what happened with Domino. Meanwhile, Domino speaks to her coworker about her ex ghosting her. Domino goes out and begins handing out flyers for the speed dating session. She steps into a shop where a man tells her witches tend to make appointments. Domino tells him that a friend came in there about a month ago and had his card. He’s gone traveling and he’s left his grimoire. Domino asks if he can open the grimoire belonging to Silas (Sam Howard-Sneyd).

The shopkeeper agrees to open it even though it’ll take some strong magic. Domino says she’ll bring it to him tomorrow. The shopkeeper remembers Silas who was there browsing. Silas had his eye on a piece downstairs. Domino says she’ll look at it tomorrow. Jason runs into Mike who learns that girl from last night blocked him. Geri (Poppy Lee Friar) lets Kat and Sammie into Domino’s place so they can look around. They question what she’s doing with another witch’s grimoire. Leon messages Domino to invite her out. Jules (Molly Harris) sees someone outside and alerts the others. Geri tells the others they have to go. Domino returns to her place moments later. The witches use their magic to remain hidden from her until they can escape.

Kat sees a message on Domino’s phone about meeting later. Jason uses Mike’s profile to find Domino. Leon meets Domino at the bowling alley. As they hang out, Domino admits she is a barista at BYOM. She shows Leon her tattoo while the other witches watch from a distance. It appears the others are trying to force her to reveal her magic. When she rushes outside, Leon follows her to check on her. They end up kissing. The other witches talk about how Domino managed not to react. Sammie believes this date was different though. They agree to regroup there tomorrow. Sammie asks Kat not to tell the Elder about Domino yet. When Geri asks why, Sammie says they’d just go after her even though they don’t have the facts yet.

Domino finds out that her nose is bleeding while she hangs out with Leon. Kat finds a message telling her she is out of her depth. While Domino is in the bathroom, she messages Mike. She returns to Leon and they begin making out. Domino ends up taking his power and leaving him passed out on the bed. Kat performs a spell that causes the ancestors to show up. Kat asks Ancestor Hyacinth (Sandra James-Yong) and Ancestor Winston (Leo Wringer) if they wanted to talk to her. They remind her that Obeah is still outlawed. They heard what Sammie said and they felt the power surge. Domino casts a spell to make Leon forget what happened and only remember they had the best date. Hyacinth and Winston tell Kat to listen to them instead of the elders.

They warn her about the danger of Domino Day. Domino admits she thought Leon might be the one thing in her life that she wouldn’t end up hurting. Mike’s profile sends her the video of what happened with Jason. She visits Jason. Domino asks for the video, but Jason wants her to explain what happened. Domino lies about it. When he accuses her of trying to drug him, Domino says he was going to rape her and film it. Jason wants her to get on her knees and beg for the video. Once she gets on her knees, Jason threatens to put the video online and show it to everyone. They end up getting into a physical fight with Jason hitting Domino in the face. Domino gets upset and zaps him. Silas returns and finds himself in Domino’s place.

Domino Day Review

The opening episode of Domino Day was okay with some interesting ideas that could become fun in future episodes. At this point, the stories are only just building so it’s hard to say whether they’ll develop into something more. The main thing is that Domino is sucking energy from her dates although she tells herself she doesn’t want that. Something is going on with Silas and the other witches are trying to decide what they should do about her.

Based on the first episode, I wouldn’t expect an overly complicated story from Domino Day. Still, Domino’s struggle may get more compelling as the story unfolds. The premiere episode of A Discovery of Witches clicked with me a lot more although that lost its way in the later episodes. Domino Day is shot and acted well enough but the story may or may not be a weak point.

Being generous, the episode wasn’t irritating or annoying and there is always the possibility that the story will develop effectively. Siena Kelly is enjoyable in the role of Domino so the character may be able to connect with viewers as her struggle is expanded on a bit more. The episode scores a 6 out of 10.
