Then, we jump over to the hospital and see Massimo (Alessandro Borghi). He looks at a newspaper article talking about the death of Edward Stuart and his department’s record profits. Then, they play an intense game together. After the game ends, they discuss Nina who is taking Ed’s suicide hard. It is explained that she is close to Claire. They admit that nobody saw this coming but Massimo wonders if it had something to do with the shame of the false record wins. Dominic tells him to keep his suspicions to himself. After the intro, Dominic learns that the doctors have put Carrie (Sallie Harmsen) in a coma.
Massimo believes the board doesn’t want him since the other guy is dead and he still didn’t get it. Massimo admits he owes his career to Dominic before Dominic says he needs to fly to Washington. They agree to discuss it when he returns. After that, Massimo calls Li at Black Ship Investments, but she is busy and doesn’t talk to him. Then, he is approached by the journalist who accuses him of using her. Massimo denies that the story had anything to do with Ed’s death and suggests asking his psychologist. Sofia (Laia Costa) admits she knows people at The Guardian but can’t understand why Massimo would leak information about his bank. Massimo returns to the office while his partners wonder if the police will want to question them. During a company meeting, they learn that the police will want to talk to some of them.
Moments later, Massimo talks to Paul (Harry Michell), Kalim (Paul Chowdhry) and Eleanor. Massimo says Dominic is stalling but promises to take care of it. The others agree that they’re with him. They believe Ed killed himself because of stuff they made up. Massimo says the bank has been covering his losses and calling them record profits. They chat about that briefly before Massimo tells them to get back to work. Seconds later, Dominic calls the Wentworth Estate from DC and asks about Claire. He encourages Nina to get Massimo to confide in her so he can stop him from making a mistake. We go to Rome and join an interview about the leaking of confidential information.
Sofia listens to the interview as Daniel Duval talks about democracy and politics. After the interview, Sofia learns that Daniel is moving on. She tells him about Massimo wanting to speak to The Guardian because he has dirt on the NYL. Daniel believes Sofia wants to help him so he tells her to contact Hilary Mason. Massimo gets a call and learns about Dominic talking about Carrie. He is told to watch himself because Dominic thinks he is going to do something. The meeting with Li Acheng is confirmed. Moments later, Massimo meets with Oliver (Malachi Kirby) who admits he wants nothing more to do with him. Massimo denies driving Ed to his suicide and he wants Oliver to help him prove that. Oliver doesn’t want to help, but he is eager to know why Ed died.
Oliver is told to go to the address. Dominic arrives at the meeting and speaks to Margaret about Ed’s suicide. She thinks they have a problem before attending the speech. He makes eye contact with another man while Strauss-Kahn goes on about poverty and inequality. After the speech, Dominic talks to the man and is promptly introduced to Nicklaus and Karl from Rheinthaler Bank. He explains Nina isn’t going to come tomorrow because she is taking care of Claire. He believes a currency substitution would be good for everyone but Dominic doesn’t like that idea. Meanwhile, Kalim and the others discuss what they’ve invested in the dollar. Dominic tells them to hedge dollars and buy euros up to 50% gently for the next 15 days. He claims he is going to secure their future.
Oliver goes to Ed’s place and meets with Mrs. Stuart. She gives him a computer and tells him he only has a few hours. Massimo is approached by the plane’s owner who is surprised that Massimo is interested in Black Ship. They discuss Black Ship while authorities being questioning people at the bank. Oliver gets a cab and tries to find out what he needs to find on Ed’s computer. Ed’s wife is questioned by police. She tells them about the promotion and rivalry with Massimo. She explains Ed calls her and that is why she went to the bank that day. She is asked about computers Ed might’ve had before she tells them about the laptop. She goes for the laptop while they ask Mrs. Morgan about being unable to contact her husband.
She explains that Dominic is going to Germany. Ed’s wife returns without the laptop and Dominic’s wife offers to look for it. Paul begins freaking out and makes a mess so Kalim decides to take him for a drink. Paul says he can’t afford to fail but Kalim tries to convince him that Massimo won’t fail them. Massimo hangs out with Li and shoots rifles. Massimo tells him that he wants to make Black Ship the world’s largest by bankrupting NYL. He believes Ed killed himself because he was cooking the numbers and proving it would kill NYL’s stock. Massimo wants Li to hire him and his team but Li wants to know why he would betray Dominic. Li doesn’t want to hire his team because he is worried that Massimo will turn on him one day too.
He is told that he’ll need to come alone or not at all. Meanwhile, Paul gets high and has sex in the bathroom. When he leaves, Alex confronts him with pictures of a 16-year-old girl with Paul. He is told that there is still a chance he can keep his job. To do that, he will need to spy on Massimo. Later that night, Massimo wakes up, writes on a paper, and we see Strauss-Kahn talking one again. Next, Dominic makes it to Germany and gives his partner a dollar. Dominic pressures the man to fix it. Massimo returns to the hospital and finds that nothing has changed. In a flashback, we see how they met and their relationship blossomed. She tells him that he doesn’t always need to escape. Next, he meets with Oliver and receives the information from the guitar. Oliver gets to go for a ride but his brother doesn’t.
Sofia confronts Dominic when they arrive at the parking garage. He arranges a meeting with her and Hilary. When Dominic returns, he learns about Dominic’s meeting with Li. Massimo gets a guest card for Oliver before they go upstairs where the traders are. Massimo tells him about the head of the European Central Bank intended to raise interest rates. Massimo wants Oliver to decide what to do for them. Oliver looks at the video and believes he is going to raise the rates. He is right. Oliver says he knew he was going to raise the rights because he read the man. This convinces Massimo that Oliver is right for this type of work. Next, Massimo decides to look through the files. His team enters and he admits he has been thinking about Ed. He tells them he is going to tell the reporter about everything he found.
Then, he tells them about Black Ship shorting NYL so they’ll make money either way. He sends them home seconds later. While Sofia and Hilary wait, Massimo calls Oliver and learns there was only a file with Massimo’s name on it. Oliver still has it. Paul calls someone and likely tells them about Massimo. Meanwhile, Massimo tells Kalim and Eleanor about someone logging into Ed’s laptop two hours after he died. They deleted the file with Massimo’s name on it. Next, Mr. Vance meets with Dominic who is sitting with his wife. Alex tells him about Hilary meeting with Massimo. Dominic is worried and says the report shouldn’t see the light of day. Dominic calls Black Ship and confronts Li about his meeting with Massimo. After that, Massimo leaves and meets with Ed’s wife. He says he has to talk to her for five minutes. He admits they had their differences.
She tells him that Ed declined the job because he had resigned from NYL and was quitting the business. She encourages him not to have children because the industry ruins families. Sofia gets upset when Massimo doesn’t show up. Instead, he spends time with his wife at the hospital. In the morning, Alex grabs the newspaper and takes it to Dominic. Massimo enters and asks them if there is any good news. He is confronted about Ed’s computer and Massimo isn’t sure why he was never told about Ed quitting. He accuses Dominic of deleting the files. Then, Dominic says they had to stop the police from finding the forged documents which prompted Ed to quit.
Dominic claims only Ed is to blame for his death. Massimo says he is not going to let Carrie go this time. After that, Massimo leaves and accuses Paul of telling Alex Vance about their conversation so Paul tells him about the photos. Paul is told that he should go home and not come back because he is finished. He tells the other that they’re not going to Black Ship and Ed didn’t kill himself. Li contacts Massimo and curses him. Then, he learns that his wife died 20 minutes ago. He breaks down and remembers better times with his wife. We learn that Strauss-Khan has resigned due to allegations of sexual assault. That night, Massimo talks about a devil and burning his dark soul into his.
Devils Review
I am not sure what to think about Devils. I fear that the show has too much going on at once. I am also having a tough time connecting with the characters. Heck, I haven’t even learned all of their names yet. The show is unnecessarily complex when it could be better if it was scaled back a bit.
At the very least, they got rid of Massimo’s wife and that should make room for more important matters. I think the show has potential to be very interesting but the pacing needs to be more consistent and some of the unnecessary scenes should be removed. The episode scores a 6.5 out of 10. Previous recaps of Devils are available on Reel Mockery.
