Speedy Susans – The series 2 finale begins with Gordon Crapp (Patrick Brammall) caring for Ashley Molden (Harriet Byer) after she got her wisdom teeth removed. They are soon interrupted by a call from Megan (Emma Harvie) with the news that she and Rumi (Virginia Gay) are getting married this coming weekend. She also wants Ashley to be her maid of honor, which she agrees to.
Colin looks to take advantage of the advertisement opportunity by getting Chiara (Genevieve Hegney) and Brett (Michael Logo) to tend the bar. While they are setting up for the event, Colin asks them to make it a special point to comment on Ashley’s appearance.
Colin’s strange request is explained in the next scene when Ashley briefly tells Megan about her makeover gone wrong. Ashley briefly offers Megan an out from the wedding but as it turns out, Megan really wants to get married. This awkward moment is made even more awkward by the arrival of Bernie (David Roberts), who doesn’t even recognize Ashley due to her new look.
Gordon has his own strange experience when he thanks Rumi for letting his business tend the bar. He also attempts to apologize for their disastrous dinner the other night, but she mockingly throws it back in his face. As he is leaving hastily from the room, he runs into Ashley. After briefly speaking in passing, Ashley has a confrontation of her own with Rumi’s maid of honor, Hayley (Zara Zoe). It immediately becomes clear that this is going to segue into a bit of a competition.
Sometime later thanks to Megan and Ashley, Gordon receives the awkward request of telling Professor Lee (Darren Gilshenan) that he isn’t welcome at the wedding. Gordon approaches this in a roundabout manner by telling Lee and Lynelle (Helen Thomson), but it becomes clear they aren’t getting his hints. Things immediately become strange when Lee mentions that as a gift to the brides, he compiling wedding footage, including Polaroids from the bathroom.
Things are certainly no less awkward when Aunty Peta (Genevieve Morris) begins officiating the wedding but they eventually get through the ordeal. As the party progresses, everyone looks to take advantage of the festive mood, including Chiara who spends some time with one of the younger men at the party. Bernie and Lynelle spend time together while Lee grovels to Brett at the bar about how he feels that no one wants him at the event. Much to Ashley’s surprise, Gordon even tells Ashley that he loves her.
James (Tai Hara) and Gordon have a bit of an awkward moment when he tells Gordon that Ashley will always be the one who got away. In his roundabout manner, it appears that James is trying to squash whatever beef they might have had over Ashley. James even extends condolences about Gordon’s father. This ultimately leads to Gordon proposing to Ashley. This doesn’t go at all as Gordon had intended and ends up completely embarrassed. He only manages to further humiliate himself when he tries to play the whole thing off as a joke. This is where season 2 ends.
Colin From Accounts Review
I must say that I enjoyed the finale and it does pose some very intriguing story arcs for season 3. Of course, it would have been too easy if Ashley just blindly accepted Gordon’s offer. Even more curious is whether Gordon proposed because James got in his head or if he really wanted to marry Ashley. I could be mistaken but I did not see a ring, which could mean different things.
There is also the budding romance between Bernice and Lynelle, which would be another interesting angle to pursue. Nonetheless, the stage is set for season 3, and for that, I’d give the episode a 5.3 out of 10.
