Attack – As the episode opens, Edo Zani (Lorenzo Cervasio) warns of how dangerous their mission will be but Manticore Agent Diana Cavalieri’s (Matilda De Angelis) bravery will see them to victory. In a flashback from eight years earlier, Manticore Agent Enrico Zani (Carlo Sciaccaluga) asks young Diana if she is nervous. She says a little. He tells her that it is normal and Citadel will fall, today. Manticore Agent Matteo (Daniele Paoloni) stares at her. He says Manticore knows where all Citadel agents are located and the Sister agencies are ready to launch their final attack against the enemy. She claims it will make her happy when they win. He assures her that they will win. In twelve minutes, they will reach their destination. Diana takes her medicine. Back in the present, Manticore Agent Giada (Jun Ichikawa) and Edo escort a restrained Diana off the plane to where a team of French Manticore agents are waiting. They confiscate their weapons. Diana, Matteo, and Edo get into a vehicle. Eight years ago, The Manticore team breaches the Citadel Italy Headquarters.
At the Manticore France Headquarters, an agent (Elena Prikhodko) scans Diana’s body for weapons before she is escorted away. Cecile Martin (Julia Piaton) greets and thanks Edo for turning Diana over to her. He says hopefully this will be the first step towards a new beginning. She tells him that in a few days, he will be readmitted to the European Council. He promises to turn over the German half of the weapon to her and the French Half to Wolfgang Klein (Bernhard Schutz) once the safeguards are in place. He adds that all the Sister agencies will have both halves to build the weapon together before giving her a sample of the French half. Diana is analyzed and placed in a room. Cecile tells Agathe (Sonia Bonny) that sanctions against Italy will be increased and Klein will be lowered to their level after they receive the German half. Agathe says if only Marianne Martin (Silvia Cohen) could see her now. Cecile is sure Edo will never forgive. From a remote location, Diana claims the Zanis are misleading them and not to let them board the plane. En route to the plane, Matteo says it is up to Diana now. Edo assures him that she can be trusted. Back at the Manticore French Headquarters, Diana tells Cecile that the Zanis have known about the French being half a fake since the Switzerland meeting and only she can build the weapon. She claims they informed Klein to pit him against her. Cecile asks why she is telling her. Diana expresses her desire to switch sides and claims to know everything about the Zanis.
Eight years ago at the Citadel headquarters, young Diana and a team of Manticore agents come under fire. Diana and several agents are hit by a grenade. Enrico checks on her before proceeding to the Tech Control Room. Recovered, Diana gradually pursues Enrico and the other agents. Back in the present, the French agents prepare to return Edo and the other Italian agents’ guns when an alert blares across their radios. An agent apprehends Edo. At the headquarters, Diana grows more anxious. In a flashback, young Diana discovers Andrea (Marco Cacciola) accessing Citadel’s computer system. Confiscating his gun, she identifies herself as a Citadel agent and returns his weapons. He says once the temperature reaches over 41 degrees, the system becomes unstable and starts to melt down. He stresses the need to prevent Manticore from accessing the weapon. As the temperature increases, an alert is activated. Back in the present, a French Manticore agent scans Edo for weapons. The other Italy Manticore agents arrive and are scanned as well. Cecile tells Edo what Diana previously told her. Agathe asks if they are at war. He accuses Cecile of starting the war by betraying them. Utilizing his biometric technology, he deactivates the security systems. Matteo, Giada, and the other Italian agents draw a weapon hidden in their sleeves and stab the French agents. They make their way through the headquarters, killing every French agent they encounter. They reveal hidden Zanis’ weapons that expand to the normal size before continuing through the facility.
A blast triggers a flashback from eight years ago when young Diana and Andrea are destroying the Citadel database. Cecile watches CCTV footage inside the headquarters until Edo deactivates it. Agathe issues an alert and orders all Italian agents to be neutralized. Cecile asks Edo to stop his agents but he refuses. Agathe and two other French agents draw and aim their guns at him. Smirking, he assures him that his death won’t stop the attack and warns that Ettore Zani (Maurizio Lombardi) will kill them if his only heir is killed. Cecile panics. He activates the doors closed, trapping a team of French agents, and blocks all communication. The Tech Room is locked. Matteo and his team get into a shootout with French agents. Cecile warns Edo that he will pay. He demands she order her agents to put down their weapons. While being escorted to a cell, Edo traps Agathe and Cecile inside and kills her French agents. Drawing his weapon, he deactivates Diana’s handcuffs and opens the door to her cell. She kills two French agents, retrieves a gun, and musters up the courage to battle it out with more armed agents. In a flashback, an injured Andrea tells young Diana to destroy the Citadel database before dying. Back in the present, Edo rescues Diana and they make their way to the Tech Control Room. Matteo and his team are involved in a shootout with French agents. Edo and Diana enter the control where an armed French agent is hiding. Edo accesses the computer system.
In a flashback, Diana is hiding in the Citadel Control Room when Enrico arrives. He accesses the computer system that is on fire. Back in the present, Edo copies the French half of the weapon from the French Manticore computer system. In a flashback, Diana shoots Enrico. In the present, Edo turns to see Diana’s gun in his face. She fires to his left. He turns as the bullet kills the French agent. She lowers her gun. In a flashback, Enrico is dead. Diana tells Matteo that Andrea killed him. Ettore, Edo, and Julia Zani (Thekla Reuton) are devastated. Back in the present, Edo and his team have departed the Manticore France Headquarters. He compliments Diana, Matteo, and Giada and says today marks the rebirth of Manticore Italy. At the headquarters, the doors open to Cecile’s office. She tells Agathe that Edo thought of everything. Agathe suggests they have arrived in Italy. Cecile adds with the French half. At the airport, Edo hands the French half to Matteo because today, they are a team. Matteo leaves to deliver it to Ettore. Diana waits outside. Elsewhere, Ettore transfers the data and decrypts it to reveal a dinner menu. In a parking garage, Edo receives a call from Ettore to confirm he received the menu. He asks if it will be expensive. Edo asks if sharing power with him would be too high of a price to pay. Ettore assures him that he has paid steeper prices. They agree to meet tomorrow to discuss an agreement. Edo turns to see Diana. They make love.
In a flashback, young Diana listens to a video from a now-deceased Gabrielle. He says they tried their best but Citadel has fallen. He claims there is no evidence to connect her to Citadel. He finds comfort in her still being alive and insists she must be brave when the audio abruptly ends. As tears stream down her face, she replays the video. She receives a text message with a photo of Sara Cavalieri’s (Giordana Faggiano) newborn daughter, Adele. Back in the present, Diana says they desperately try to live exceptional lives but all they want is someone waiting for them when they arrive home. He urges her to not feel guilty because it was part of her job. She expresses her desire to be free. He insists things will change, now that they have the weapon. He offers her 20 million, a passport to a normal life, and her identity erased from all Manticore databases or she could stay. In a flashback, Matteo announces the mission was a success and Citadel is no more. He demands no one tell anyone what they recovered. Back in the present, Edo is asleep. Diana retrieves the French half of the weapon as the episode ends.
Citadel: Diana Review
Edo executes his plan with the help of Diana, Matteo, Giada, and a team of Manticore Italy agents. Utilizing his biometric technology, they recover the French half of the weapon. Edo insists that Ettore share power with him. He and Diana make love but it does nothing to convince her to stay with Manticore. He agrees to give her 20 million, wipe her identity from all Manticore databases, and a passport to freedom.
Eight years ago, Manticore took down Citadel and recovered items of significant importance. Gabrielle was killed in the attack but before he died, he erased Diana’s identity from the Citadel database.
My biggest qualm is the mission seemed too easy. It’s almost as if they swoop in, kill a couple of French agents, and leave. Nothing is ever that simple and if it were, people would be more willing to challenge the system. The episode deserves a 5.6 out of 10.
