As this episode of Beyond Paradise begins, Lucy Thompson (Eva Feiler) gets on her bike to head to work. PC Kelby Hartford (Dylan Llewellyn) catches Josh Woods (Chris Jenks) trying to break into the Cute Buns Bakery. Josh flees from him. Lucy continues biking. Josh locks himself in and tells Kelby that he was just trying to get some doughnut holes for Lucy to say he’s sorry. Josh gets away. Lucy passes a sign with mysterious graffiti and enters fog before screaming. She’s gone but her bike is still on the ground. DI Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) can’t find his keys, but he finds a drawing by Rosie (Bella Rei Blue Stevenson). He finally finds his keys. Martha (Sally Bretton) and Humphrey agree to let Rosie go to the zoo this weekend. Zoe (Melina Sinadinou) wakes up Esther (Zahra Ahmadi) to tell her she’s going to be late for work. When Zoe mentions Archie, Esther jumps up to look.
Zoe knew there was something going on between them. Esther says it doesn’t matter now because it’s over. Josh finds a voicemail from Lucy who says “devil” and asks for help. He steals a guy’s bike. At work, Zoe asks Martha about Archie. Martha says she and Archie (Jamie Bamber) weren’t right for each other. At work, Esther looks at Archie’s contact information on her phone. Humphrey and Margo Martins (Felicity Montagu) arrive a short time later. Kelby comes in and complains about Josh who enters. Josh says something happened to Lucy. He plays the voicemail and worries it could be the Devil’s Hump. Kelby claims that’s just an old wives’ tale. Margo says the hump is said to be put there by the Devil himself. Josh says the Devil can take your soul. He admits he isn’t sure whether he believes that. Humphrey believes there is a simple explanation. They get to work finding out what happened. Humphrey tells Josh it’d be best for him to go home and wait to see whether Lucy shows up.
Once Josh leaves, Esther questions whether Lucy faked the story to get away from Josh. Humphrey says Lucy doesn’t strike him as the type. They agree that Josh is always lying about something though. Kelby goes to the Devil’s hump. He finds a necklace on the ground and Lucy’s bicycle nearby. Humphrey listens to the voicemail message again. Margo says Lucy hasn’t been to any hospitals and she hasn’t used her bank cards. Humphrey says the snarling sounds like a hellhound. Kelby calls to tell them about Lucy’s bicycle and a crucifix. While searching the area, Kelby notices a man with a dog in the distance. He looks again and they’re gone. Humphrey and Esther arrive. Kelby says there are no useful fingerprints on the necklace. Josh said it doesn’t belong to Lucy. Humphrey believes the necklace is connected to this. As for Kelby, he says Josh has to be involved somehow. Josh receives a call from Bertie but he ignores it. There’s a list of things for him to do on the refrigerator. He decides to put his beer back and complete those tasks.
At the Ten Mile Kitchen, Esther drops off Zoe’s keys. Martha questions whether everything is okay. Esther doesn’t want to talk about it at first. She eventually admits that the man is Archie but it’s over anyway. Martha says she and Archie were together a lifetime ago. She already suspected there was something going on. Martha gives her advice and says it’s worth taking the risk. Kelby keeps seeing weird stuff as he returns to town. He stops by the bakery before continuing. When Kelby visits Josh, he learns about Lucy’s list. Kelby offers to help him. Josh makes sure to cover up the bike he stole earlier. Kelby comes inside and they begin working on the shelf together. He asks Josh why he wanted to apologize to Lucy. Josh says his old mate, Bertie, got in touch and wanted to offload a bunch of knock-off bags. Lucy thought he was involved but he wasn’t. Josh swears he’d never steal a paperclip again if she’d come back safe. Kelby is going to hold him to that. He returns to the station and tells Humphrey about the argument.
Kelby admits he believes Josh might be innocent on this occasion. Humphrey wonders who owns the crucifix. Zoe approaches Archie to ask what happened between him and her mother. Archie admits he didn’t want to end things. Zoe says she hasn’t seen her mom this happy in forever. She believes Esther is just scared or stubborn. Zoe suggests Archie could try to win her back. At home, Humphrey helps Rosie and the others bake. Anne (Barbara Flynn) is worried Humphrey isn’t the right person for the job. They eventually consider calling the bakery. The next day, Margo says Josh called for an update. The team listens to the cleaned-up recording. The hellhound now sounds like a dog barking. Humphrey wants to find the owner. They also learn that one of Lucy’s patients, Cathy Morgan, didn’t show up for her visit. Humphrey decides to visit Cathy (Sarah Bennett-Green) in person. They speak to her son, Trent Morgan (Murray McArthur). He claims Cathy is visiting her sister in Cornwall and should be back in a day or two. Trent says there’s no way to get in touch with them.
He also doesn’t know Lucy. Humphrey notices a picture of Cathy and she’s wearing the crucifix necklace. Cathy claims it must be a coincidence. Outside, Humphrey tells Esther that it all has to be connected. He calls Margo to ask her to find out more about Trent and Cathy Morgan. Humphrey tells Esther he promised he’d come home earlier. Esther thinks it’d be okay for him to go. Steve Banley (Dean Nolan) calls Trent and tells him he has three days. Steve has a dog with him and he looks like the man Kelby saw earlier. Anne admits that the cake is actually pretty good. During the party, Hannah Owen (Amalia Vitale) calls. Archie calls Esther who decides to step out and take it. Archie agrees to take things at her pace as long as she doesn’t give up on them. He asks her to call him tomorrow. Esther returns to work after the call. Rosie enjoys cake. Humphrey insists it’s the best cake he’s ever tasted in his entire life. Martha finally notices the call from Hannah. When Humphrey joins her, he learns that Rosie is going home. Margo says Trent and Cathy have significant debt and make the minimum payments each month.
Last week, Trent made a large one-off payment on one of the credit cards. Esther wants to check his phone records. The post-it note with “devil” on it keeps falling off the board. Kelby seems particularly worried since it happened earlier as well. Martha says Hannah is coming tomorrow at 10. Martha admits she thought they’d have more time and it wouldn’t hurt so much. They have to break the news to Rosie. She learns that she’s going home to her mom so she won’t be going to the zoo. Rosie isn’t happy. She throws stuff around and runs to her room. Margo finds a text exchange between Trent and someone called JD. It sounds like they’re exchanging drugs. Esther says there’s only one way to find out. She takes Kelby with her to speak to Trent. Esther insists they can help if his mom is in some kind of trouble. Trent admits that Steve Banley took her. He makes deliveries to Steve’s shop. He was desperate and a bag of weed was just lying there. Trent mentions that Steve has a carpet shop on Harcourt Road. He pleads with them to make sure his mom is safe.
Humphrey and Martha try to get Rosie to open the door. He ignores a call from Kelby. Esther and Kelby find the carpet shop locked. Esther manages to guess the combination and retrieve the key. They go inside only to find the store empty. They see a dog bowl and bed on the floor though. Esther wants to check a CCTV camera outside the store. Rosie eventually agrees to let Martha and Humphrey come in. They all apologize before Humphrey gets another call. Kelby tells him about Cathy being kidnapped by Steve Banley. CCTV footage shows Steve leaving the shop with his dog and another man. Humphrey notices something on the window of the shop. He tells Rosie she’s just cracked his case. Once Kelby and Esther arrive, Humphrey tells them that they’re in the bar. He tells them about the reflection on the window. Humphrey was reading the window sign and said devil instead of “live bands every Saturday”. They try to figure out how Lucy got caught up in the whole thing. They believe Steve kidnapped Cathy and Lucy witnessed it. As a result, they had to deal with Lucy as well.
They break into the bar moments later. Kelby quickly calms the dog. Humphrey and Esther free Cathy and Lucy. Steve and his partner flee. Josh joins the chase. Kelby and Josh manage to grab the suspects. Cathy and Lucy are fine. Lucy is happy to see Josh. Esther overhears them talking. Humphrey tells her he couldn’t have asked for a better partner. Kelby hears the dog still barking inside the bar. Next, Hannah arrives to pick up Rosie. She tells Martha that they’ll be fine. Rosie says goodbye to everyone before she leaves with Hannah. Esther meets Archie. She almost gets out of her car but gets back in. Archie approaches her vehicle. Esther says she can’t get out of the car. Archie suggests she can’t let herself be happy. Esther apologizes and drives away. Josh returns the guy’s bicycle with a note thanking him. Kelby has adopted the dog that he’s now calling Tara. Humphrey and Martha go to the boat for drinks.
Beyond Paradise Review
The finale of Beyond Paradise was about as satisfying as the series can get at this point. It also did an okay job of setting up storylines for a possible renewal. One of the best things about the episode was Josh’s development as love has changed the character for the better. Esther still isn’t really to get into a serious relationship with Archie.
Martha and Humphrey had to come to the realization that they were only temporarily caring for Rosie who returned to her mother. That’s for the better considering the two really don’t have time for any children anyway, but the show did an okay job dealing with that. Kelby’s ending was very fitting as well since he finally got the dog he wanted.
The finale was pretty good overall. At the minimum, Beyond Paradise is a good way to escape reality for an hour without adding more frustrations to your life. The series doesn’t take itself too seriously and it’s an easy watch overall. The finale was possibly one of the strongest episodes of the series.
It scores a 6.5 out of 10. Recaps of Beyond Paradise can be found here. Find out how to support our independent site at this link. Learn more about advertising with us here. Discuss Beyond Paradise and other popular shows at the Reel Mockery Forum.
