As this episode of Beyond Paradise begins, Gabriella Dalmori (Alicia Charles) makes chocolate treats. Martin Gaffney (Matthew Gravelle) comes in and invites Gabriella out for a drink with some others. Gabriella tells him to get out of her shop. Kenny Pluckley (Brandon Fellows) comes in while Martin is still there. Once Martin leaves, the work begins for Kenny who makes the first delivery to Sherie Howard (Holly Atkins). Then, he visits Dr. Lionel Jennings (Abdul Salis). The last delivery is made to Lizzie Dyer (Bebe Sanders). Peanut finds Sherie on the floor. Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) gives Rosie (Bella Rei Blue Stevenson) her breakfast. Martha Lloyd (Sally Bretton) joins them moments later. Martha suspects Rosie’s mother is looking forward to seeing her. DS Esther Williams (Zahra Ahmadi) calls before Humphrey leaves. He meets with Esther who says there have been three poisonings.
Esther tells Humphrey that the victim is Dr. Lionel Jennings who is a psychotherapist. They find that one chocolate is missing. Humphrey wants the lab to test the chocolates. He finds a note with the Forrest Gump quote before suggesting the other victims ate chocolate as well. Martha speaks to Anne (Barbara Flynn) about Rosie who won’t open up. Hannah is taking Rosie to the prison at 10. Anne reminds Martha that she has to look after herself too. She leaves moments later. Martha learns Rosie has made her mother a picture and her mother is supposedly going to take her to Spain. Martha tries to get her to think about something else. Kelby (Dylan Llewellyn), Margo (Felicity Montagu), and the others discuss the poisonings at the station. Margo says Dr. Jennings is on a ventilator. The hospital will let them know when Sherie and Lizzie are ready to talk. Gabriella worries that the poisonings will ruin her business. Humphrey asks if the chocolates were contaminated with the medication during the making process.
Gabriella says she doesn’t have anything like that there. Someone called William Marshall placed the order last night. She tells them Kenney doing the deliveries. Gabriella says she copied the note from the order. She remembers that Martin, who owns the fudge shop down the street, popped in while she was making them. Gabriella claims Martin has had it in for her since she moved there. She explains that Martin wanted to invite her to a local business meet-up. Humphrey and Esther speak to Martin who insists he wouldn’t poison people. Martin says Gabriella has rubbed a few people the wrong way since she moved in there. He asks Nigel to get some rum and raisin for the officers. When they leave, Archie Hughes (Jamie Bamber) calls Esther who says she’s working. He convinces her to meet him later. Humphrey wants to speak to Kenny. When they meet him, Kenny insists he didn’t tamper with the chocolates and no one could’ve in the van.
Kenny is still working at Willowview. He says Gabriella and Martin used to get along well until something happened. At the police station, Kelby tells Humphrey about the victims. Sherie runs a hair salon called The Snip and Style. Dr. Jennings moved down there two years ago to start up his therapy practice. As for Lizzie, she works at the Erotic Emporium on Pullman Road. There is nothing obvious linking them. Kelby says William Marshall died a couple of weeks ago. Margo says the lab results confirmed there was no digoxin in the chocolates. Humphrey suggests that means only one chocolate contained the poison. They question whether the victims ate something else. Humphrey and Esther go through the suspects. They go to the hospital to speak to Sherie who says she didn’t know the other victims. She signed for the delivery around eight and had one chocolate. Sherie hopes her dog is okay since it has attachment issues. Esther agrees to speak to someone about that. Kelby struggles to find anything connecting the victims.
Reverend Kate (Chizzy Akudolu) calls to ask Kelby to come to the police station. Esther tells Humphrey that Lizzie wasn’t very helpful, but she managed to get her phone. The medical report shows that the victims had about 5mg of digoxin in their systems. All they ate at the time was chocolate. Kelby meets Kate and suggests he wasn’t a good match with Charlie anyway. Dr. Hodges (Syreeta Kumar) checks Anne’s mole. Hodges wants to get her to the hospital for a biopsy right away. She says it’s best not to do this sort of thing on her own. Anne doesn’t want to put Martha through all of this again. Kelby tells Margo what the hooligans have been doing at the church. He’s going to go there tonight to see if he can catch whoever is doing it. Margo tells Humphrey they got CCTV from the street outside the chocolate shop. It only shows Gabriella going in, Martin going in, and Kenny going in. It also shows them all leave. Kelby says the therapist’s assistant won’t release the patient list digitally.
He suggests one of the patients could be related to the other victims. Esther wants to look into Sherie’s clients. Humphrey speaks to the Chief Superintendent on the phone. Martin approaches Gabriella to ask what she told the police. He asks if she really thinks he’d do that to her. She thinks it’s odd that he was there this morning. Margo finds out that Martin is having money issues and he’s going through a nasty divorce. Martin shacked up with Gabbi and his wife kicked him out. Kelby gets ready to head to the cemetery for the night. Esther goes on a hike with Archie. Rosie gets upset and yells that she hates peas. Martha tells Humphrey she’s been like this since she got back. Humphrey thinks they should just give her some space. They find her defacing the wall. Rosie yells at them again. Esther and Archie enjoy the view. Rosie finally calms down. Martha tells Humphrey that Rosie misses her mom so much that the guard had to separate them at the end.
Archie asks Esther if he’s changed her mind. She believes it’ll take more than a view to do that. Archie admits he wants to impress her because he cares what she thinks. He invites her to come back to his place and listen to The Cure. At the cemetery, Kelby begins hearing noises around him. He watches someone swap out flowers. Kelby gets a call from his mother and that leads to a foot pursuit with the suspect. The person gets away but drops their keys. The next day, Kelby talks to Margo about it. Esther joins them moments later. Kelby tells Esther about the keys and the key fob the individual dropped last night. The IT boys are tracing the address to see what the fob is linked to. Humphrey arrives and learns the case is in the newspaper. He wants to get some progress before the Chief Super arrives. Charlie Woods (Jade Harrison) interrupts to ask for an update. Humphrey hides the newspaper while Kelby goes through the details of the case.
Charlie learns that the primary suspect is Martin Gaffney who owns the Fudge Pantry. She doesn’t seem impressed. In private, Charlie talks to Humphrey about his foster placement. She’s keen to support Humphrey and Martha. She’s willing to offer time off or flexibility. Charlie says Kelby is a talented officer. Anne tells Martha that she might be trying too hard. She reminds Martha that she cannot fix Rosie all on her own. Rosie comes out and joins them after the film finishes. She apologizes for drawing on the wall and insists she won’t do it again. Margo suspects something is going on with Esther. Seconds later, Esther questions if there was a Monica who worked at the hairdressers. A few months ago, Lizzie was texting someone named “Mon G”. Margo suggests that could be Monica Grey. She was let go about three months ago. Esther says Monica was also a patient of Dr. Jennings. Kelby doubts Monica is involved because she’s already dead.
At the cemetery, Kelby says someone put roses on Monica’s grave before they ran off. At the hospital, Lizzie says Monica was her best friend. At one point, she stopped laughing and talking so much. Lizzie says it could’ve been her boss who fired Monica for no reason one day. They planned a girl’s trip to help her get over it, but Monica ended up changing her mind. Lizzie was angry and went without her. Although Monica called her multiple times, Lizzie didn’t pick up. Then, Lizzie heard the news. Esther tells Humphrey they can speak to the therapist. Dr. Jennings says Monica was referred to him. One day, he asked her some tough questions. She shut down and took her life a short time later. Humphrey says his goldfish looked dead. Dr. Jennings says he was okay right after the delivery. Zoe serves Anne at the restaurant. Anne tells her she’s having tests at the hospital tomorrow and Martha doesn’t know. At the station, Humphrey asks for the list of deliveries. He talks about each victim and says the poisoner is out for revenge.
The poisoners loved Monica deeply. He mentions Forrest Gump and his relationship with Jenny. Humphrey believes it is the delivery driver, Kenny Pluckley. Margo says he was in the same school year as Monica. Kelby the keyfob directed to the Willowview House care home, which is Kenny’s place of work. Humphrey goes through the victims. Dr. Jennings failed Monica and Sherie was a bully. Monica’s best friend turned her back in her time of need. Humphrey believes Kenny loved her since school and stood by her until the end. Every Thursday night after his pub shift, Kenny visits Monica’s grave. He’s angry and believes the victims abandoned Monica. Kenny wanted to hurt them and make them feel the pain he felt. Humphrey suspects he got the digoxin from the care home and stole an old man’s card to pay for the chocolate order. He goes on to say the poison was never in the chocolates. Instead, it was on the pen. Humphrey believes Kenny painted the poison onto the pen near the top.
The victims ate a piece of chocolate and passed out. The goldfish died because Jennings had poison on his fingers. Kenny wanted these people to suffer, but he had no intention of killing them. Kenny is arrested moments later. At the station, Margo assures Kelby he will find love. Kelby believes it’s time for the apps. After work, Esther catches up with Archie. They begin making out before going into Archie’s house. Kelby puts the flowers back on Monica’s grave. Anne finds Humphrey and the others painting the room.
Beyond Paradise Review
This episode of Beyond Paradise was fairly enjoyable although certainly not spectacular. The third series has been a decent time-killer as long as viewers are willing to put up with a few hiccups here and there. The investigations are fairly standard although they sometimes have clever twists at the end.
Thankfully, they usually don’t go overboard with the twists and turns though. The personal lives of the characters aren’t particularly interesting, especially Humphrey and Martha’s at this point. The characters certainly wouldn’t have enough time to be fostering any children.
It would also be easy to get annoyed with some of the kids. Archie and Esther’s relationship doesn’t really sit well with me although it may pan out in the long run. Ultimately, the viewer’s enjoyment will likely depend on how much they like Humphrey and Kelby.
Fans of those two characters will enjoy this episode more than others. It was enjoyable and lighthearted making it easy to watch even without prior knowledge of the backstory. This episode scores a 6 out of 10. Recaps of Beyond Paradise can be found here.
