As the episode begins, Louise (Simona Brown) has a wonderful dream. She approaches Adam (Tyler Howitt) who is playing in a pond nearby. David (David Bateman) tells them that dinner is ready and we see him cooking food on a grill. After dinner, David and Louise have sex before Louise wakes up from her dream. Moments later, David gives Adele (Eve Hewson) a pill and we see that she has a big black eye. He carefully inspects her mouth to ensure she swallowed it. He reminds her he is going to call before leaving. When David is gone, Louise begins sobbing. After that, we see a flashback of Adele hanging out with Rob (Robert Aramayo) at the facility. Adele is worried about getting caught smoking because she doesn’t want to stay in the facility for 30 more days.
Rob is surprised that she is so worried about not being able to kiss David. Rob says life is about to get better for Adele but not for him. She realizes that Rob doesn’t want to go home but she thinks it’ll get better. He insists he is only better inside with Adele but not outside. He explains that they’re equal inside but he is only a junkie out of here. Rob reveals he thinks some of the happiest moments of his life have been in there with Adele. He says he thought about making sure they get caught so they have to stay. Adele wants Rob to promise that he’ll come and visit so he agrees to do so. Back in the present, Adele hears the doorbell and finds Anthony (Aston McAuley) at the door. He is looking for Dr. Ferguson.
When Anthony sees her face, he wants to know what happened but she says he shouldn’t be there. Anthony offers to help her before she says he is kind. Louise meets with Adele and learns that she had an accident with her cupboard. Louise says it looks worse than that before Adele suggests they skip the gym for the day. Adele tells her it isn’t a big deal and they agree to go to the park for a run. Once they stop, Louie says she never knew how good a proper night’s sleep could feel. Adele knew she could do it and learn how to control her dreams because she shines like Rob did. Then, Louise tells her where the dream took her but she doesn’t mention David. Adele tells her she can go anywhere she wants with anyone. She encourages Louise to keep going. Louise admits she thinks Adele has changed her life.
Adele wonders if Louise will do the same for her one day. When Louise goes to the office, Sue (Georgie Glen) tells her she is missing all of the excitement since the Hawkins parents came in and they’re in Sharma’s office with Ferguson. When they leave, Louise hears them saying that Anthony likes Dr. Ferguson so he wouldn’t make it up. Sharma (Roshan Seth) asks what Anthony was doing at Ferguson’s house anyway. The parents promise that their son wouldn’t like something about this. Sharma says they’ll get to the bottom of it. When Sharma returns to David, he tells him it is his professional responsibility to investigate such allegations. David isn’t happy that a patient showed up at his doorstep and thinks his personal life has nothing to do with it. David says he did not hit Adele and he encourages Sharma to call her.
Sharma calls her moments later and Louise decides to listen to the conversation. Louise hears Sharma ask Adele if her husband hit her. Adele begins laughing and apologizes because she knows it isn’t a funny subject. She says David would never hit her. Adele admits she has a bruise on her face but she blames herself. Sue asks Louise if she is listening so she says no and claims she is on hold with the gas company. Adele says it might be her fault before explaining that Anthony did come to their door. She didn’t want to get him into trouble because he seemed so desperate. She goes on to say that there is nothing to worry about besides her clumsiness. The call ends and David returns home a short time later. She asks him about the flowers but David wants to know why she didn’t tell him about Anthony’s visit.
Adele says she didn’t want Anthony to get into trouble. David asks why Anthony would say he saw him hit Adele. She says he should tell her since he is the psychiatrist. When asked, Adele confirms she never once saw Anthony before. She quickly changes the subject to the flowers and David leaves. Meanwhile, Louise drinks alone until the doorbell rings. It is David and he has wine. David rushes in and begins chugging the wine in Louise’s kitchen. David talks about them being together but Louise says there is hardly an us. She wants to know whether David hit his wife. He says he didn’t hit her and explains that Adele says she opened a kitchen cupboard into her face.
He doesn’t know if it is true but he knows he didn’t hit her. He goes on to say he doesn’t believe Adele and he knows Louise doesn’t believe him. He tells Louise she is the only good thing in his life and he wants to keep her separate from everything else. Louise wants David to deal with his problems because she cares about him. She doesn’t think their relationship is helping anything. Then, she asks if he still loves Adele. He admits she still loves him. Louise admits that sounds ugly before telling David to get his stuff and go home. As David walks away, Louise encourages him to stop drinking so much. Adele goes to sleep that night and has a nightmare in a dirty home. She approaches a strange door and opens it. She steps aside and walks toward Adam as he plays near the water and David tells them that the food is ready. She makes David disappear before joining her son.
Then, she notices another door nearby. She walks across the water’s surface and reaches for the door. She wakes up before she can open it. Louise gets Rob’s journal and reads what he wrote about loving Adele. We see a flashback and Rob says he doesn’t want to leave if it means leaving Adele. He doesn’t think Dr. David is going to protect her and says she has been protected her whole life. Rob says he knows the truth such as what happened to Adele’s parents. He questions whether David was really driving by in the middle of the night just in time to save her. He says it seems pretty convenient and that he’ll never forget about Adele. He claims he is going to look out for Adele because he doesn’t think David will. Meanwhile, Adele has a dream and approaches a door.
She opens the door and steps through. At work, David apologizes to Louise and says he shouldn’t have put all of that now her. He admits he really cares about her and he can’t help but think about her all of the time. Adele dreams while David tells Louise there is something he has to get sorted out on his own. He knows she owes him nothing but he claims he has fallen in love with her. It looks like Adele begins to cry as the boiling water spews over and she wakes up. Adele says oh David before sobbing. Louise tells David it isn’t fair and she can’t decide his life for him. He says he is going to fix it before Louise leaves. Adele screams before hitting the gym. She approaches Emma and tells her she’d like to get an extended guest membership for her friend Louise Barnsley. Seconds later, Anthony meets with Adele and tells her he cannot see Dr. Ferguson anymore.
She says he did a very brave thing and she is grateful. Anthony knows David isn’t going to like this but Adele says she doesn’t care and he shouldn’t either. He confirms he got it for her before handing her a small bag. She puts it in her pocket and gives Anthony something. Anthony says he knows other stuff about him but she won’t like it. She encourages him to tell her anyway. Adele returns home and sits with her drug and syringe kit. Then, we see Rob ride in a taxi and meet with Adele. She gives him a tour of the house and shows him the paintings on the wall. They joke around before Adele takes him to her parents’ room and says they never woke up. They sit in front of the fireplace, smoke, and talk. She learns that Rob brought something else so she wants him to hide it from David.
Rob learns David is coming on Saturday. He asks her what it is like to be so rich and pretty. She says it is lonely so he offers to swap with her. Back in the present, Adele angrily prepares dinner before the phone rings, and David answers. It is Emma from the gym and she wants to confirm the guest membership for Louise. David asks for her to repeat that to clarify what he previously heard. When the call ends, David approaches Adele and asks about her phone. He looks through her phone and finds her text messages to Louise. David gets upset and leaves. That puts a smile on Adele’s face. David visits Louise’s place and tries to find out about her conversation with Adele.
Louise tells him how the relationship started but he says she looks like a lunatic. She calms him down and admits it is a mess. Louise says it wasn’t a lie and that she just didn’t tell him. Then, she tells David about the things she sees and how she feels guilty for falling for him. She asks what he is afraid of and whether it is that she knows something she shouldn’t. When asked, she says she knows he has all of her money. David tells her she is fired and will hand in her notice to Dr. Sharma tomorrow. He threatens to show Sharma the text messages and tells her to stay away from him. David leaves and she begins crying. In the morning, Louise goes to Dr. Sharma and gives her notice. David listens as Sharma tries to fix whatever is going on. Sharma says he’ll get a temp to cover her and call her in a month to see where she is at.
Sharma says she is too good and he can’t let her go that easy. She apologizes and rushes out. Sue hugs Louise and tries to find out what is going on. She packs her items and prepares to leave. David passes by and wishes her luck before Sue asks what has happened. When Louise leaves, she goes looking for Adele and sees her passed out through the window. She breaks the window and unlocks the door. She checks Adele and tries to get her to wake up. Adele wakes up several times before finally waking and finding a soaked Louise in front of her. Adele struggles to get to her feet. Louise helps her get some coffee before they talk about David firing her. Adele is impressed that Louise kept their secret so she offers to talk to David and explain everything. Louise says she wouldn’t go back and there are things Adele should know about David. When Louise tries to tell her, Adele nearly passes out again before showing her what she has been taking.
Louise learns that David prescribed Adele strong antipsychotics and sedatives. Adele says she has to take them because David watches. She admits it wasn’t always like this and started after Brighton. She says David had an affair then. Adele tells her about the woman he was having an affair with and that the house was supposed to be their fresh start. She says she didn’t leave him because it wasn’t simple. David has a file on her that contains everything he needs to make her look crazy and he uses it as an insurance policy. Adele doesn’t want to involve Louise anymore and thinks it is best if David doesn’t know she was here. She admits she might be crazy because she wants David to love her again. Louise says she may have to consider that David isn’t the man she thought.
Adele takes Rob to the well and tells him about it scaring her when she was a kid. Rob says you can’t even see the bottom but you can feel how cold it is down there. Rob tells her he loves this place and he’d stay forever if he could. They walk around and hold hands. Next, Adele puts on a nice dress and invites David in. He makes sure she didn’t know who Louise was when she met her. She claims it was just one of those things. She tells him about the moment she knew how much he loved her. Adele claims that he won’t let it go and he wants to let it destroy them. She offers to give him peppermint tea to help him sleep and says she will fix things. Then, we see the watch and Rob dead at the bottom of the well.
Behind Her Eyes Review
I have to be honest. I really don’t understand this show at all. I understand almost everything that is going on but I don’t get the bigger picture. Am I the only one completely confused by the story and pacing? Sometimes, I’ve been slightly distracted while watching Behind Her Eyes but I think I’ve gotten the gist of every episode.
Why can’t I find the purpose or objective? What have I missed during these four episodes? Is it because I haven’t read the novel? At this point, I am unfortunately questioning whether the show was just too incoherent to hold my interest. I’ve already watched four episodes so I’ll stick with it but my interest has minimized during the last two episodes.
It could just be me though since I don’t have the motivation or energy to search these episodes and decipher the purpose. I’d have to give the episode a low score such as a 6 out of 10 or something. Previous and future recaps of Behind Her Eyes can be found on Reel Mockery here.
