Part Ten The Chosen – The episode opens with the Dachshund Man (Wayne Cartwright) walking his dachshund down the sidewalk. Watching from an upper-floor window, John warns Connor/Sean McDougall (Bob Franklin) that the Dachshund Man is dangerous. Connor suggests bad men must always die. Joel (Darren Gilshenan) claims he owes him 58 big ones. Connor says it is only money. He draws his gun and zooms in on the man but refuses to shoot for fear of traumatizing the dachshund. Joel promises to have his man take care of the dog. Connor reluctantly shoots the man dead, grabs his equipment, and follows John. The dachshund whines as his owner bleeds out on the steps. Joel tells the dog to cheer up in passing. At the garage, Connor pours transmission fluid on the ground under Anika Van Cleef/Stella Heikkinen’s (Marta Dusseldorp) vehicle. A short time later, she and Jeremiah (Toby Leonard Moore) arrive to pick up the car. He pulls back the tarp. Stella loves it. Jeremiah points out the fluid on the ground. Getting a closer look, Connor says it’s transmission fluid and reckons it will take three days to fix. He agrees to do it for free.
In Jeremiah’s truck, Stella drives to a compound to give Thaddeus (Matt Nable) an envelope filled with money. She complains about paying for nonexistent border security which is nonexistent. She says Behrouz (George Kanaan) is badgering her to pay Vickie/Frankie McLeish’s (Kerry Fox) debt. He asks if she is going to start trafficking drugs and assures her that he cares less. He warns of a reckoning. She questions what would happen if their donations stopped and pestilence ran amok. He suggests it may make her realize its true benefits. Later at a pool, Stella holds her breath underwater while Bong Cha (Kim Ko) keeps time. She surfaces and inhales deeply. Bong Cha criticizes her 48-second breath hold. Exhausted, Stella says that is four seconds longer than the last time. Bong Cha boasts of being an Olympian solo synchronized swimmer. She recommends utilizing her time underwater to think of ways to get her money. Stella sinks in the water, sees Kerry (Elle Mandalis) and Brony (Emily Milledge), and quickly resurfaces. They demand to know what actions she has taken to get their money. Kerry reminds her that she promised them untold riches. Stella accuses them of wasting what she made them and never considered investing it. Brony asks if she is working to get them more money. Stella sarcastically says, “Yeah” before leaving.
Sammi (Ilai Swindells) tells Stella that her account has $80k in it. Shocked there isn’t more, she grabs for his keyboard but he stops her. She says if Gus Norton moves to Resnick Equity, Allied Holding’s share price will drop overnight. Edwina Hayes gets a job and Allied Holding could trade up by 60%. He is skeptical about it. Desperate, she invests all her money, hoping to hit it big by tomorrow. Upon arriving home, Stella finds Iris Heikkinen (Ava Caryofyllis) sketching and Otis Heikkinen (Imi Mbedla) eating roast chicken. He admits to stealing it. She criticizes his actions. He threatens to steal a whole chicken the next time. She urges him to do something worthwhile. He asks what opportunities the town offers. She suggests he be Connor’s apprentice. Iris tells them that Connor left. Elsewhere, Constable Jason Delaney (Andre de Vanny) makes a report of items stolen from Sammi, Tarquin (Ben Knight), Brony, and Bong Cha. Stella arrives and Jeremiah shortly after her. The victims blame Connor who disappeared. Brony suggests he is dead. Jason tries to give the report to Stella but she declines to deal with it. She is shocked to learn Connor left in her car. Bong Cha calls for him to be killed. Jeremiah reminds them that Connor has lived among them for over 20 years. He is relieved Connor didn’t steal his water pump. Connor speeds down the road in Stella’s car, pulling a camper.
Walking home, Jeremiah questions why something didn’t see Connor leaving. Stella insists the townspeople owe her because she is a good boss and pays for their protection. She complains about them wasting their money. He suggests she stop trying to keep them safe. She asks him to speak with Otis. He recommends whacking him over the head like Graham did him. She demands there be no violence. He recalls Graham making him clean the septic tank when he lost their egg money. She approves because it would show him tough love. On the compound, Abel (Harry Prior) tells Thaddeus after his wife’s departure, the garden has stalled. Thaddeus claims she was drawn to the fires of hell where she will burn for eternity. Abel believes she cursed the crop. Thaddeus says burnt it and replant it. Rebecca (Grace Winspear) asks Thaddeus if he would approve of her marrying Abel. He asks if she is old enough to procreate. She says yes. Believing they will have a strong stock, he agrees to pray about it. They walk away holding hands.
Connor pulls into a field where caravans are already set up. The people conspiracy theorists give him a shirt and sunglasses. He tells Barry (Kris McQuade) that aliens have been watching him for a while. She figures he will know why soon. He puts the sunglasses on and looks up at the sky. After dark, Barry drinks only her homemade brew to avoid mind-control ingredients. Connor says they first started putting stuff in chocolate. She warns it is in everything and won’t stop until they are all robots. He takes one of her homemade beers. She boasts of being 93% self-sufficient in food and clothes. Connor tells her the aliens are supposedly from a Sagittarius dwarf galaxy. He explains how the aliens took his wife, Evelyn, while she out buying roast chicken which he no longer eats. Pointing at a nearby family of “Reds,” she claims they have been eating nothing but roast chicken. She insists everyone else is their descendants and the Reds stay in contact with the mothership. Barry warns him against staring at a redhead. He dons his sunglasses and gets comfortable. The next morning, Connor wakes in his lounge chair, holding a pink flamingo lawn ornament. No people or caravans in sight. The wind blows his hat away.
Iris hangs tin cans attached to salt-soaked strings from the ceiling. Otis assures her there are no ghosts. She doesn’t buy it. Stumbling on his words, Jeremiah insists Otis get off his butt. Otis ignores him. Raising his voice, Jeremiah orders him to get outside because he is going to clean his septic tank. Otis complies. Stella smiles. Walking along a road, Connor hails an oncoming car but it speeds past him. Elsewhere, Sammi informs Stella that she lost almost all of her investment. She is broke and out of options. A short time later, she checks out the facility utilized to make drugs. Tarquin demands $5k upfront. She promises to pay him from the proceeds. He calls out everything they will need to get started. She demands he find Frankie’s notes. At the compound, Thaddeus identifies himself as a Prophet of God before announcing three weddings – Sarah (Michelle Lee) and Ezekial (Clark Wagner), Noah (Elija Reiher) and Leah (Belle Lohrey), and he and Rebecca. She starts to say something but stops. A short time later, Rebecca urges Abel to run away with her to Mother Bethel. He says it will be an honor for her to marry Father.
Connor gulps down a nearly empty water bottle. Outside The Chicken Shop, he stares through a window at a chicken roasting on a spit. He apologizes to Evelyn for not going with her. At a church, he attends a stranger, Robert’s funeral service. The priest (Andrew Casey) commends the deceased. After the service, Connor fills his plate. Robert’s wife, Rebecca (Danni Millhouse) looks at him. He introduces himself as Robert’s brother-in-law. She tells him that she is his wife. He claims to be the brother of his first wife. She looks confused. Later at a pub, Stella confronts Jeremiah about taking Otis kayaking. He says Otis doesn’t need someone giving him directions. Disagreeing, she recalls he promised to make him clean the septic tank. He asks if she wanted Otis to ignore her for six months like he did Graham. Upset, she tells him to forget Thursdays and leaves. Brony invites him to have tea with her on Thursday if he cooks. At the church, the priest offers Connor samosa for the road. On a balcony, Stella watches Jeremiah leave the pub. Otis thanks her for arranging the kayaking trip and invites her to go the next time. She agrees and kisses him. Iris finds an ear in her cornflakes.
All packed, Stella, Otis, and Iris arrive at Jeremiah’s house. Stella tells him that they should go to Luang Prabang. He reminds her that she refused when he suggested it. She kisses him and takes the kids to his truck. Elsewhere, Connor pays Joel an unexpected visit. He says a close encounter zapped his car and assets. He asks for a loan. Joel offers him a job as a hitman. Connor denies shooting anyone in 20 years and asks about the dachshund. Joel claims to have taken good care of Mitzi until she died in his arms. He shows him a photo of Anika who double-crossed some Russians. Connor recognizes her but keeps it to himself. Joel says a talisman is after her. He offers him $10k to kill Benji Valentine (Jake Pike). Later, Joel gives Connor an AR-180 and sees half of his trigger finger is missing. Connor says it works most of the time. Set up in front of a window, Connor aims at a redheaded Benji. He races outside and warns him there is a hit out for him. He gives him money and says tell to Evelyn that he loves her. Confused, Benji flees on foot.
En route to Luang Prabang, Stella and Jeremiah encounter a roadblock. She approaches Thaddeus and warns that he will not stop them from leaving. Neil Roebuck (Benedict Hardie) pulls up. Thaddeus informs her of his agreement with Roebuck before canceling their agreement. A dozer blocks the road. Jeremiah speeds away in reverse. The clutch won’t engage. Later at the pool, Roebuck waits for Stella to resurface. He threatens her if she tries to leave. At the compound, Thaddeus chooses Rebecca as his wife. Frankie interrupts the service and explains how she survived being submerged at the bottom of a lake with four gunshot wounds. She says Arthur loved him and disputes his immortality. She slices his throat. His followers weep. She introduces herself as the immortal.
Bay Of Fires Review
Nothing has changed except the cast has grown significantly. There were already too many characters and now, it’s a challenge to keep up with them all. Stella, Otis, and Iris are the only characters with a backstory. It would have been nice to know why and how all the rest landed in witness protection. It’s unlikely anyone in the audience will care when they are killed off.
The script is overly wordy and desperately needs more action scenes to break up the monotony. The execution fails to live up to its potential. It tries to be quirky and succeeds at times.
The hit on the dachshund man was in bad taste. The director sugarcoated it by making Connor sympathetic to the dog. The episode deserves a 4 out of 10.
