Bad Monkey Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

Andrew Yancy Bad Monkey Apple TV

The Damn Arm Is Back – The episode begins with Christopher/Nick Stripling (Rob Delaney) dragging Andrew Yancy’s (Vince Vaughn) unconscious body to the dock where he sets Yancy’s demise to appear as a drunken accident while night fishing. The following morning, Nick and Eve Stripling (Meredith Hagner) are practically packed and ready to leave Florida forever, there’s just one problem – Nick’s phone is AWOL.

By the time Nick begins to suspect he lost his phone at the crime scene, it’s revealed that he’s made another huge oversight. Yancy is still alive. This is revealed in a very brief scene when Evan Shook (Alex Moffat) shows the house to two prospective buyers, Scott (Timothy Mark Davis) and Dan (Kevin Tydlaska). Out of fear of being surprised again, Yancy chose to spend the evening at the abandoned home. After Yancy uses the opportunity to derail the sale, he will find Nick’s cell phone, half buried in the sand.

Despite the security measures on Nick’s phone, Yancy practically declares the case solved when he turns to Rosa Campesino (Natalie Martinez) to tend to his injuries, once again. Yancy just happens to step away to use the restroom as Detective Mendez (Gonzalo Menendez) shows up looking for Yancy.

Elsewhere, Egg (David St. Louis) is on a similar search for Neville Stafford (Ronald Peet), which leads to a brief confrontation with the Dragon Queen (Jodie Turner-Smith) and YaYa (L. Scott Caldwell) where he will encourage them to share his location if and when he shows up. The Dragon Queen will casually point out that it is Neville who is paying her and not him.

With Mendez right on their heels, Rosa attempts to sneak Yancy out of the morgue disguised as a corpse. Before they end up in the elevator alone with Mendez, Yancy will also receive a call from Ro/Rogelio (John Ortiz), alerting him that Mendez has put out an APB on him. Initially, Mendez doesn’t show any interest in Rosas’s body bag but perhaps overplaying her hand, he becomes interested. Yancy will dart into a full seated position just as Mendez is opening the bag. Mendez ends up knocked out.

While Yancy and Rosa make plans to hide out at her parent’s house, Egg continues his search for Neville. His next visit is with Dawnie (Reese Antoinette) and although she claims to not have seen him, Neville is inside viewing the contents of the stolen USB drive. Once he discovers that he’s hit the mother lode, it merely becomes a matter of whom he can trust with the discovery. Much to his surprise and displeasure, Dawnie reminds him that he already knows someone with the juice to take the discovery further, Tanny (Krys Marshall). After some careful apologizing and appealing to her love for the island, Neville convinces Tanny to help him.

It appears that life on the run is about to get extremely difficult for Bonnie Witt (Michelle Monaghan) as Agent Johnna Russell (Ashley Nicole Black) leverages Doctor Clifford Witt (Jeffrey S. Herman) to help smoke her out with threats of charging him as an accessory. When Bonnie realizes she has no finances and nowhere else to go, she has no other option but to return to the one place where she suspects that she will always be welcome, Yancy’s house. Suspecting that Yancy’s absence is tied to an outing with Rosa, she doesn’t think twice about the rock that she smashes through his sliding glass door to gain access.

As it turns out, Yancy appears to be right at home with the Campesinos. He enjoys being the butt of their jokes just as much as they enjoy his attendance. Despite the celebratory mood from Mel Campesino’s (Gizel Jimenez) promotion to Weather Girl, things become more serious when Yancy requests Jorge Campension’s (Hunter Romanillos) help to bypass the security on Nick’s phone. Inez Campesino (Madelin Marchant) will later grill Rosa about sleeping with Yancy and claim that he is trouble.

A bit more about Gracie/The Dragon Queen’s past is revealed during an outing at the beach with an old friend, Asia (Lauren F. Walker). Gracie will also later hint about a possible interest in Egg. Being a native islander, Asia is more than familiar with Egg and wastes little time pointing out how wealthy his employer, Christopher/Nick is. At about the same time Nick just happens to catch the news piece on Yancy’s remarkable survival.

Dawnie will not only escort Neville to his meeting with Tanny, but she will also aid in his escape after Tanny double-crosses him with Egg. This is also right around the time that Inez lets Yancy know he’s not only worn out his welcome but he is bad for Rosa. Rose will only learn about this several hours later while Sheriff Sonny Summers (Todd Allen Durkin) threatens Ro in an attempt to locate Yancy. Rosa appears to know where Yancy has gone when Jorge mentions the fingerprint bypass on Nick’s phone.

Eve and Nick’s goodbye visit with Caitlin (Charlotte Lawrence) goes bad from the moment Eve accuses her of sharing Nick’s secret with Simon (Tyler Picchi). Rather than denying the claim, Caitlin assures them that Simon can keep a secret. That appears good enough for Nick but only enrages Eve further. They will practically end up getting kicked out after Nick sides with Eve on a separate issue later.

Yancy and Rosa will end up back on the run after an unexpected encounter with the Groundskeeper (Hardy Rawls). Although the risk proves to have been worth the risk, Rosa appears more interested in learning while hee left without saying anything to her. He tries to justify his actions by claiming her mother’s suspicions about him were right, but she stops him with a kiss.

While using Nick’s phone to learn about Eve and Nick’s flight out of Miami, the arrival of Cody (Alex MacNicoll) takes Bonnie’s situation from bad to worse. Yancy and Eve will not make it to the airport in time to prevent Nick’s flight, but their arrival will lead to Eve learning that Nick lied to her about killing him.

Bad Monkey Review

For what should have been a midseason finale, episode 5 didn’t shape up. The episode wasn’t bad but it was average at best. Although I did expect a bit more, I do enjoy the story arc that Cody’s arrival creates. I wasn’t so as much expecting Bonnie to get financially clipped either, although I somehow always felt that she would end back up in Miami.

Despite not being one of my favorites, I enjoyed learning a bit more about the Dragon Queen’s past and her possible infatuation with Egg also creates another intriguing arc. That said, I was always figuring she was more drawn to Neville. All in all, the episode earned a solid 5.3 out of 10.
