A Hundred Bucks Says You Won’t – The episode begins with Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn) learning from his lawyer, Montenegro/Monte (Victor Turpin), that Doctor Clifford Witt (Jeffery S. Herman) has dropped all charges. He is so excited with the news that he doesn’t even inquire about any of the details. His streak of luck appears to continue when on his way out, he notices Evan Shook (Alex Moffat) being overrun by angry bees. It only takes a brief call from Caitlin (Charlotte Lawrence), with assurances that Eve Stripling (Meredith Hagner) murdered her father to change things.
In the meantime, Eve has her sights set on getting Neville Stafford (Ronald Peet) off her property and recruits Christopher (Rob Delaney). While Christopher orders Egg (David St. Louis) to hasten Neville’s departure, Rosa Campesino (Natalie Monaghan) continues looking into the missing watch. These efforts are soon sidetracked by a call from Mel Campesino (Gizel Jimenez), confirming their later plans.
Rogelio (John Ortiz) quickly tires of Yancy’s nagging as they pull into the Key West Station. Yancy appears to be on an all-new level of annoying now that he thinks he’s getting his badge back. It’s only minutes later that Sheriff Sonny Summers (Todd Allen Durkin) helps him realize his oversight. As it turns out Yancy is getting his badge back, but he’s being assigned to restaurant inspection detail. Neville and Driggs’s (Crystal The Monkey) luck doesn’t appear to be much better when they return home to find that their house razed. Even worse, he’s given ten minutes to collect his belongings and get gone.
Bonnie Witt (Michelle Monaghan) meets Yancy at the station to claim that she’s being forced to leave town but refuses to tell him why. This soon becomes unimportant to him because he realizes they are being followed. After getting dropped off, the vehicle nearly runs him over. Elsewhere, Neville returns to the Dragon Queen’s (Jodie Turner-Smith) to air his grievances but loses his nerve. When she interrupts his departure, he does tell her that her magic isn’t working. He assures him it will in time.
Although Rosa meets Mel and several of her friends (CC Crain) at a local bar, she can’t keep her mind off the missing watch from the Stripling case. Yancy flexes his new authority by shutting down Brennan (Brian Thomas Smith). While doing this, he sees Madeline (Nina Grollman) but doesn’t get a chance to speak with her because she is gone before he can even go attempt to go after her.
Things continue to get worse for Neville when he joins Willy (Jacob Daniel Smith) and Ollie (Durrell Lyons) to discover that Christopher has literally transformed their favorite bar overnight. Willy and Ollie don’t appear to find the new place as off-putting as Neville, but Charles’s (Dwayne A. Thomas) brief argument will Egg suggests he isn’t happy with the changes either.
By the time Yancy sits down for dinner that evening, Rosa has managed to uncover the make and model of the missing watch. Much to her surprise, Yancy not only refuses to get involved but he blames her partly for his current predicament before hanging up on her. Her subsequent call with her mother doesn’t go much better but this time it is Rosa who does the hanging up.
Much to his credit, Yancy attempts to forget about the case but has little success. After discovering that Rogelio is even less interested, he ends up at Peninsula Rentals where he doesn’t have the most productive meeting with Brittney (Shira Abergel). After receiving a call from Caitlin about being late for their meeting, he leaves empty-handed. He continues to separate him from the case but Caitlin appears determined to convince him that Eve is responsible for her father’s death. It doesn’t take him long to realize that she does make a compelling case but doesn’t take the debate.
Egg pays Charles a home visit after learning that he’s stolen what he thought he was owed from the bar’s register. At the same time, Eve receives Caitlin’s threatening message about turning her in to the insurance company for murdering her father. Christopher offers to go with her and even mentions having K.J. Claspers (Bob Clendenin) fly them, but she is gone before he even gets out of the shower.
Yancy continues to try to stay away from the case but can’t get the meeting with Caitlin out of his mind. This eventually leads him to Eve’s house in Miami where Rosa has also just shown up to question Eve about the watch. Much to her surprise, it is Yancy who greets her at the door. They are only spared a few minutes before the Gardeners (Adam Ignacio) show up to help themselves to refreshments. Yancy and Rosa seek concealment in the shower and after a good bit of joking; they discover blood and bone shards in the drain. At about the same time, the Gardener discovers them but Caitlin proves to be quick on her feet by pretending to have just purchased the home.
Feeling out of options, Neville flies to Key West to get his money from his Sister, Samara (Aba Arthur). It doesn’t take long to realize they don’t have the best relationship but agrees to give him the money. Caitlin is equally surprised when Eve shows up at Simon’s (Tyler Picchi) church with the request to speak. Despite Eve’s tactful approach, Caitlin remains distrustful until she discovers that Eve didn’t pawn her father’s wedding ring, she is actually wearing it as a charm on her necklace. Eve further alters her image by telling Caitlin that she was named a beneficiary in Nicholas’s will. As those meetings took place, Yancy and Rosa were busy collecting the bone shards and making plans to get them tested the following morning.
Yancy returns home where he is confronted by Oklahoma State Bureau Agent, Johnna Russell (Ashley Nicole Black). As it turns out, Russell is there looking for Clover Chase/Bonnie Witt, who just happens to be a former English teacher wanted for sexually assaulting a student. Bonnie apparently jumped bailed and eluded police for nine years. She would likely have remained undetected if it wasn’t for Yancy’s YouTube video with Charles Witt becoming such a hit. He doesn’t get much time to digest this due to the death wails of a nearby baby deer trapped in Shook’s construction work. Russell not only helps him free the deer but gives him a ride to the vet as well. Despite the late hour, Yancy practically leaves the man with no option but to treat the deer.
The episode ends with Ya-Ya (L. Scott Caldwell) and the Dragon Queen performing a ritual on the beach. As they speak and chant, it becomes clear that Neville, Yancy, and Rosa’s lives are about to implode.
Bad Monkey Review
After two episodes, I have to admit that I am intrigued to learn where Yancy and Neville’s stories go from here. I feel as if this could be one of the better series I’ve seen in a while. Considering what I’ve watched, this isn’t saying much. I enjoy the scenic coastal views as well as the free education on the Voodoo religion. Although this is only a minor aspect of the story, I find it the most intriguing.
I was glad to see that this episode was much shorter and hope that’s a common trend. The episode could have been even more on point if they cut the rental car scene and several others. Bonnie is no doubt an eccentric but I certainly was not expecting her to be a predator, if this in fact the case. All in all, not a bad way to go into the third episode. I’d have to give this one a 5.5 out of 10.
