As the second episode begins, Matthew Cuthbert (R.H. Thomson) asks the stationmaster about Anne. Meanwhile, Anne (Amybeth McNulty) is harassed as she steps off of the train. She flees from the strange gentleman. Matthew tries to borrow a horse from a local businessman. When he refuses, Matthew bums a ride from a friend. Anne boards a boat and leaves town. Anne replays Marilla’s words over and over in her head. It is clear that Marilla (Geraldine James) is distraught with Anne gone. Anne manages to return to the orphanage. She doesn’t go inside. Instead, she finds a place to sleep outside. In the morning, Jerry Baynard (Aymeric Jett Montaz) helps Marilla prepare to leave. However, Rachel Lynde (Corrine Koslo) intervenes and convinces Marilla that it would be best to remain at home.
Rachel insists that it is best to wait for Matthew to return. Rachel comforts Marilla inside. Anne wakes up just in time to see the milkman. She manages to bum a ride from him by agreeing to help deliver the milk. Matthew is forced to sell his pocket watch for money. He steps outside and believes he spots Anne. He is hit by a wagon and is knocked to the ground. Meanwhile, Anne helps deliver milk. The delivery man gives her some food as well. Matthew wakes up with a bandaged head. He refuses to remain in the clinic. He continues heading towards the orphanage. Meanwhile, Marilla works herself to death in hopes of eliminating her worries. In the morning, Matthew learns that Anne never showed up at the orphanage.
Marilla heads to the barn and gives Jerry breakfast. It seems that her experience has changed her. Matthew heads outside and runs into the milkman. Meanwhile, Anne bums money at the train station. He offers poems for money. Matthew enters moments later and interrupts. Anne shows no interest in returning to Green Gables. Eventually, a local man tries to get involved. Matthew tells him that Anne is his daughter. That changes Anne’s mind right away. She rushes over and hugs Matthew immediately. Moments later, Matthew and Anne return to Green Gables. Marilla is happy to see them, but she holds back her emotions. She sends Anne to her room. Marilla speaks with Anne in private. She keeps her emotions inside and invites Anne down for supper.
Supper is a little awkward. Matthew speaks, but the ladies remain silent. Jerry finds Anne in the barn speaking to the horse. He tells her that Marilla has been upset, but Anne doesn’t believe it. Then, Anne hangs out with Diana Barry (Dalila Bela). They speak about the upcoming picnic and Anne’s big adventure. Again, Diana tells Anne that Rachel said Marilla was distraught. Anne tells Diana that Marilla doesn’t seem to want her back. Anne returns to the farm and watches Marilla from is distance. The picnic begins seconds later. The young girls hear the adults saying Anne is an orphan. As soon as Anne arrives, some of the other girls begin harassing her. She makes a run for it. Marilla goes after her. Marilla finally musters up the courage to apologize. They agree to forgive and start anew.
The following day, Marilla asks Anne to call her by her name. Then, Matthew and Marilla surprise her. They want Anne to become a Cuthbert. After a brief celebration, Anne signs the family bible and officially becomes Anne Shirley Cuthbert.
Anne With An E Review
Anne With An E has been excellent. The series is a little predictable and somewhat cheesy. That is to be expected from a remake. Still, both episodes have delivered big in the emotional department. It has really been difficult not to watch this show without feeling something. You’d have to be dead inside not to feel some type of emotion. I’ve enjoyed both episodes equally. The casting is perfect.
If the series is able to maintain this type of quality, Anne with an E might just be one of the best shows I have watched this year. The second episode scores a solid 8.5 out of 10. Catch up with previous recaps of Anne With An E now!
