s01e02 a murder at the end of the world darby

Chapter 2: The Silver Doe – Darby Hart (Emma Corrin) checks on Bill (Harris Dickinson) before running for help. She goes to the receptionist and asks if he knows what room astronaut, Sian Cruise, is in. Darby is told she is in room four. She asks him to get them into Bill Farrah’s room. As she runs to Sian’s room, she has a brief flashback. Sian (Alice Braga) learns that Bill is hurt. In a flashback, Darby and her father arrive at what appears to be a crime scene. Sian makes it to Bill’s room and immediately begins rendering aid. When an EMT (Andy Christopher) arrives, Sian says she believes it is morphine so they’re going to need NARCAN. Darby notices The Silver Doe book sitting on the ground among other items.

In a flashback, a young Darby (Anastasia Veronica Lee) looks at the body of Leann Duffer. Darby’s dad seems to be okay with letting her remain at the scene. After Darby learns Bill is dead, Marius (Christopher Gurr) arrives and complains about just being called. Marius wants Eva (Britian Seibert). Darby argues that this isn’t right. As they escort Darby out of the room, she bumps into a waiter and causes him to break glasses. She asks if that was going to room 11, but the waiter won’t say. Andy (Clive Owen) apologizes to Darby and admits this is awful. He says they’re contacting the Icelandic authorities and the embassy. Darby is introduced to his head of security Todd Andrews (Louis Cancelmi). Todd and Eva will take care of her. They insist Bill won’t be left alone. Eva takes her to her room and reminds her she can call her if she needs anything.

Ray (Edoardo Ballerini) is tasked with setting up a direct line for Darby to reach Eva’s mobile. Eva gives her pills and recommends getting some sleep. When Darby is alone, she throws books and her sheets on the floor. She takes the pills Eva gave her. In another flashback, Darby’s dad takes her to another crime scene. She gets into the hole with her father to check the bones. Darby finds it odd that the earrings are the only thing on the victim’s body. After school, she helps her dad examine the remains. Darby suggests there will be no justice for the victim. Her dad hopes a wound like this cause a fast death. Darby asks if it is ever. He tells her not to think like that because it’s not professional. Her dad makes her put the earrings in the box and put the box up.

Darby ends up taking the earrings home with her. She takes a picture of them and performs a reverse image search. Darby eventually finds something about a Jane Doe who was identified by her jewelry. She posts on a forum about what she found in Clinton County, Iowa. Later, a user named “K!LLB!LL” contacts her to ask what else she has. Darby says the earrings don’t match the victim because young girls don’t wear earrings like that. K!LLB!LL tells her that they need more. Darby goes on to tell them where the body was dumped. When asked if there is anything else, Darby says the dead talk to her. Darby begins video chatting with the other user. K!LLB!LL asks what the dead said to her. In the present, Darby steps into the hallway and hears Lu Mei (Joan Chen) tell Martin (Jermaine Fowler) that Martin Luther is her favorite American name.

Lee (Brit Marling) comes over to comfort her. Andy announces that Bill Farrah passed away last night. David (Raul Esparza) tells Rohan (Javen Khan) that it’ll be okay. Andy thinks it is best to leave Bill and let the authorities tend to the body. Darby says she was with Bill last night when he died. She goes on to suggest Bill was scared like he was fighting for his life. Sian argues she might not have known him anymore since she hadn’t seen him for six years. Andy argues that they should continue. Lee says she would like to stay. The others agree. In the bathroom, Darby gets mad and tries to clog a toilet. Then, she reports the messy toilet. She manages to get rid of the receptionist before reprogramming her ring. Darby returns to Bill’s room.

She checks Bill’s tattoos before asking Ray what data from the room is being stored. She asks Ray to disable audio command recording. Darby questions whether right-handed people inject themselves in their right arms. Ray says rarely. Darby checks other possible injection sites. She picks up an item and tries to dust it off before asking Ray if a drug user would ever inject themselves with gloves. Darby has to hide when Lee enters the room. She watches Lee search a bag nearby. Once Lee leaves, Darby sneaks out too. They join the others as Martin begins talking about Ray. They discuss whether Ray can be art and whether Ray can be used by artists. Martin shows them how Ray is better than him because he is better-studied. He is going to let them watch the first five minutes of his forum.

Darby tells Lee what she found including the fact there were no prints on the needle. She explains this is her 57th crime scene. Darby believes someone in the room injected Bill. She asks Lee what she was looking for in the bag. Lee thinks she needed to see him with her own eyes. Lee admits she felt like an overdose seemed strange. The cameras are wireless on their own VLAN. Darby doubts she’ll be able to get the SSID and password. Lee says the favorite part of his book is when she used her old Mattel hack to get into the serial killer’s house. She urges Darby not to get caught. Darby researches a camera hack. She believes she might be able to access it if she can take the camera apart. As she begins smoking, she has a flashback in which Bill asks her about smoking. Darby says smoking helps her relax and think differently.

Bill argues they should start looking at the living. Later, he suggests hacking police databases in other states. Darby agrees to do it. Eventually, Darby says she doesn’t hear the dead. Instead, it is like their silence enters her. Bill tells her about his hacking history. Darby says she is going to start checking Missouri records. At 3 AM, Darby contacts Bill to say she just found something really important. Bill is shocked and suggests they should speak to Marta Diaz in person. Darby says she’ll call him before quickly ending the conversation. Later, she tells Bill that she is helping her dad. After she apologizes for not calling him back, Bill says there is something he wants her to see. He wants to meet in person so he tells her to turn on Find My Friend. Bill leads her to railroad tracks before the call ends and the lights start flickering.

Darby tells a woman nearby it is a hack and it is Morse code. She explains it says, “Happy birthday Darby”. In the present, Darby tries to find out about the room’s LED smart bulbs. She takes out a smart bulb and tries to use it to find secrets. Darby finds the SSID name. She asks about the numbers she finds. Ray says April 14, 2017 is Zoomer Anderson Ronson’s birthday. Darby manages to access the doorbell camera videos. She watches Bill go into his room followed by Ziba (Pegah Ferydoni) who walks away from the door. Then, someone in a mask approaches the door. She watches the police leave. In a flashback, she is dropped off at Ray’s Tavern. Darby eventually goes inside and meets Bill.

A Murder At The End Of The World Review

A Murder at the End of the World is quickly going off the rails in episode two as the plot becomes more ludicrous by the minute. If viewers are able to shut off their brains and just accept this for what it is, they may be able to enjoy the series. If they’re using any common sense, they’ll see through the nonsensical scenes very quickly. Unfortunately, this has too many unbelievable moments with Darby being the biggest culprit of all.

For instance, we’re supposed to believe that Darby is great at almost most everything, including hacking into police databases, hacking smart devices, collecting evidence, and so on. She even climbs into a burial spot with her dad to look at bones, yet she is distraught when she sees Bill’s death. The whole thing just reeks of nonsense. Then, the writing is immature and makes a mockery of the viewer. Are the writers trying to impress boomers by showing them that Darby knows how to upload pictures to Imgur or use a Reddit clone? The fact they used the name “Zoomer” makes it seem like they’re just insulting viewers.

Why did we need to see every little step in the process anyway? That’s another issue with the show. It is bloated in every sense of the word, but very little of it is going to matter in the long run. Half of the cast members are props in the background with few lines after all. The pacing is so tedious because we’re being shown every little step like we’re too stupid to figure it out on our own.

With this type of pace, A Murder at the End of the World is going to be absolutely intolerable at seven episodes. This episode scores a 4.5 out of 10.
