TV Shows to Watch: The Returned

The Returned is a French television series that began airing on November 26, 2012. The first season, which aired on Canal+, consisted of eight episode. The series was met with critic acclaim and even won an International Emmy for Best Drama Series. A second season is currently in production, with an American remake also in the works (cringe).

The setting for the show is a small French town. Of course, most of the scenes are dark and gloomy, which help to push the sense of dread and creepiness onto the viewer. At the beginning of the series, the viewer is shown the deaths of many of the town’s residents. For instance, Camille is in a bus that runs off the road, which kills her instantly. Simon, on the other hand, was a victim of suicide. Each of the characters begin reappearing in the town. Obviously, this causes a lot of confusion among the townsfolk.

However, it is possibly the conflict within the Returned themselves that is most compelling. For instance, Simon refuses to believe that he committed suicide. Do not forget about Serge, who is was serial killer, with a bizarre ritual of eating his victims internal organs. Of course, Serge was killed, by his brother, seven years ago. Like the others, Serge has returned to the town that he once haunted.

While you might think the show would be cheesy and unrealistic, it actually presents an interesting take on a somewhat unrealistic premises. It does an excellent job showing how the Returned and their families would deal with the situation, which is likely the most interesting aspect of the show. The actors all do a good job bringing the characters to life. While I won’t go into further details, the show has a lot of interesting twists and turns. Although a lot of people didn’t particularly care for season 1 finale, the show is still worth a watch, especially with season 2 on the way in 2015.

Overall, this is definitely a creepy show, with a touch of human emotions. Of course, the big downside for most here is that you’ll need to read subtitles. If this is something that turns you off, don’t waste your time. However, if you’re willing to give the show a shot, you’ll find a suspenseful, emotionally and creepy experience that is always awaiting your return.
