The Maze Runner Review

The Maze Runner is a 2014 action thriller, which is based on the James Dashner book of the same name. When the movie opens, we’re introduced a young boy (Dylan O’Brien), who has lost his memory.  He wakes up in an elevator, which transports him to a strange land, where he is surrounded by a mysterious group of boys.

With time, the boy finally recovers his name, Thomas, and begins to develop a friendship and rivalry with many of his new mates. He is taken under the wing of the leader of the group, Alby (Aml Ameen). Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) is second in charge of the Gladers and also takes a liking to the “greenie”. Of course, Thomas also finds some opposition in Gally (Will Poulter), who is a roughneck and attempts to control everything.

Soon, Thomas discovers the group is surrounded by a massive maze, which transforms and changes every night. A group of Gladers, which is known as the runners, run through the maze each day, in order to map it out in hopes of finding an exit. Thomas becomes interested in everything in his new world, especially the maze, but is forced to perform menial tasks around the camp. On day, he is attacked by a runner, Ben (Chris Sheffield), who has been stung by a mysterious creature. The other Gladers are forced to trap Ben inside of the maze, where he dies in the night.

Eventually, Thomas gets his chance to enter the maze, when he attempts to save Alby and Minho (Ki Hong Lee), who are unable to escape the maze. No one has ever made it through the night inside of the maze. Of course, that is all about to change. Thomas is faced by a dangerous creature, which is known as a Griever. Miraculously, he is able to overcome, trap and kill the beast, before escaping the maze in the morning.

Despite this triumph, he will face new challenges back at the camp, before the group is joined by their last members, a female named Teresa (Kaya Scodelario). Will Thomas be able to discover the truth behind the maze and escape? Or will he be stung and forced to die inside?

Review

Despite being somewhat of an action film, the movie is a little bit mysterious and bleak. Each of the actors delivered strong performances, which helped to fuel the authenticity. The action is wonderful and will leave you on the edge of your seat, once Thomas finally enters the maze, while the mystery of the whole environment will leave you questioning until the end. However, things do become a little clouded and strange towards the end of the movie, which might turn the stomach of some viewers. All in all, this is definitely a fun film that is worth a watch. It deserves an 7.5 out of 10.

saw this film, not sure what to think of it. A little confusing at times, but interesting none the less. I'll have to watch it again. Reminds me a bit like Inception, one of those movies where you have to watch several times to fully understand it.
