The Librarians: And the City of Light Review

When the episode opens, we’re introduced to Victor Finch (John J. Jospeh), who has been searching Collins Falls for three days. Apparently, he is on the hunt for aliens. With his special goggles, he is able to see weird figures, which causes him to run out of the woods screaming. When he tries to escape the town, he is attacked by the residents. Next, we see Ezekiel (John Kim) and Eve Baird (Rebecca Romijn) arguing over whether or not it could be aliens. Despite Jake (Christian Kane) and Jenkins (John Larroquette) insisting aliens aren’t real, Cassandra (Lindy Booth) suggests humans aren’t the only living beings in the universe. With a little convincing from Eve, the pair wind up in Collins Falls.

Jake suggests something is wrong with the city, since the buildings appear to have been built much earlier than suggested. He heads with Cassandra to investigate, while Eve and Ezekiel head to the victim’s truck. Jake finds Mabel Collins (Haley Webb) working on a light post. She suggests the lights have worked for a long time. After a quick introduction, they discover that Mabel is the town’s archivist and knows everything about the town, since her family founded it. Next, Ezekiel and Eve check out the area, where Finch went missing. Eve suggests someone might’ve moved Victor’s truck, before they discover someone is following them. Ezekiel discovers a gas lamp in the woods, before Victor emerges. Victor tries to attack, but Eve puts him down. However, she is zapped by electricity, which makes her disappear.

Jenkins belittles the crew for losing the guardian, Eve. He is able to discover that she is alive and on the planet somewhere. The crew speak with Finch. Finch is unable to provide them with anything helpful and only believes he has been missing for a day and not three weeks. The pair watch Finch’s video, which shows electric energy all around him. Jack meets with Mabel at the archive. Mabel expresses her desire to leave Collins Falls and travel the world, before he questions her about the weird readings around the lamps. Next, everyone meets up at the lamp out in the woods and Jenkins is able to make Eve reappear for a few seconds. Jake convinces Mabel to keep everything a secret. However, the diner waitress (Robynn Hayek) seems to have overheard everything.

Jenkins has improved Finch’s goggles, which will allow them to see the magical energies. Jake visits the archives again, while Ezekiel and Cassandra follow the energy through the woods. Ezekiel is able to see Eve thanks to the goggles. With Cassandra’s help, the pair head towards the source of the energy. Back at the archive, Jake suggests the gas lamps were built, before the town and the buildings. Cassandra wanders to Wanderclyffe Dams. Ezekiel follows Eve into town, where he is able to see present and past residents. Jack discovers another town was build here in the past, which was built by Nikola Tesla, while Ezekiel discovers that the aliens are snatching bodies. At the dam, Cass is confronted by an evil Finch. She attacks him and runs. Everyone rendezvous at the archive and Cassandra suggests Mabel is bad. Cassandra shows everyone a picture from the 1900s, which contains Mabel.

Mabel explains in 1915 Nikola Tesla was doing experiments on wireless electricity transmission. Cassandra insists the lamp posts are the transmitters, but something went wrong and the townsfolk got zapped. Mabel tells everyone that Tesla created a protective shield, which allows everyone to exist thanks to the lamps. Although Mabel was able to keep her original body, the others weren’t so fortunate. Mabel suggests they’re close to saving everyone, by using the power from the dam. She insists they need to get the dam’s capacitor up and running within two days, or the energy will get discharged and they’ll be stuck.

Next, the group discusses the possibility of being able to help. Cassandra suggests it is a 50/50 chance for success. Eventually, they agree to help. Jake and Mabel speaks alone and she reveals she is also stabilized by the lamps. She questions why Jake has stayed in his current situation. Jake speaks about his father’s oil rig business and his father’s alcohol problem. He insists he stayed to work the company and hung out with the wrong people. Afterwards, the pair share a kiss.

The town turns on the power, but Cassandra grows worried that failure will result in a major explosion, which will impact miles outside of the town. Finch, now Norman, destroys the console and locks Cassandra inside. He is able to make contact with the group, who rescue her. Cassandra suggests the risk is too dangerous. Jake and Mabel attempt to reach the override switch on the room, while Ezekiel tries to prevent Norman from stopping them. Eve possesses Ezekiel, which allows him to put a beat down on the civilians. Although the energy seems to be killing Mabel, they make it to switch and turn the power off.

Mabel succumbs from her wounds, but Eve is able to escape. Eve suggests sometimes you just lose. Jenkins enters and gives Eve the appointment book, which has a message from previous Librarians. Jake heads off on his own and travels to Paris in Mabel’s memory.

Review

All in all, this was a fairly solid episode of The Librarians thanks in part to the trippy plot involving the historical inventor, Nikola Tesla. Sadly, this episode of The Librarians didn’t end in a happy fashion. Instead, the group was unable to save the day, despite saving their Guardian. Of course, this is quite refreshing and offered a unique twist. The episode deserves a 7 out of 10.
