The Game: S1.E5 Review

The revelations from the previous episode carry over, as the team struggles to cope with the ideal of a mole amongst them. The Soviet crisis continues to spiral out of control, while Wendy Straw (Chloe Pirrie) delivers the team a much needed break. Also, Sarah Montag (Victoria Hamilton) finds herself in danger. Can Alan (Jonathan Aris) make the right decision to save Sarah and their relationship?

The show opens to a flashback to one year ago and a man carrying a sign reading “The end is nigh” and preaching. Joe Lambe (Tom Hughes) walks and chats with Yulia (Zana Marjanovic). The pair discuss what they’ll miss, when they’re gone, before planning a future meeting and splitting up. An officer attempts to defuse a bomb or pretends to, but it is no good. The bomb explodes.

Bobby Waterhouse (Paul Ritter) has a run in with Edgar, who tells him they have listened in to some IRA members phones. He mentions one of the men they traced, Philip Denmore. They discover the man has barely left the house, until he meets with Colin Blakefield, Sarah’s missing informant. Edgar demands to get credit, if the information turns out to be beneficial. The team reveals Blakefield’s history of petty theft and import/export. Blakefield approached Sarah previous with information regarding a major KGB operation, which was likely Operation Glass.

Daddy (Brian Cox) suggests sending Wendy in to investigate Denmore’s house. Meanwhile, Joe and Jim Fenchurch (Shaun Dooley) discuss who the mole could be. They discuss each member of the team as a possibility. While Joe includes himself, Jim suggests Moscow would never recruit him, since he believes in nothing. Afterwards, Wendy visits Denmore’s house at a nurse named Grace and gains access inside.

Joe makes contact with Kate, who is being held in prison. He suggests the prison stay will help her look legit to Soviets. Joe suggests starting their investigation with Kasimir. Kate (Rachael Stirling) agrees to help. Wendy has finished treating Denmore’s face. Wendy sticks a cloth, with the keys, under her apron, as she passes Denmore the newspaper. He grows upset at the newspaper. When Denmore rushes out, she retreats to the bathroom and begins making imprints of the keys.

Daddy suggests sending Wendy back into Denmore’s house. After the show returns, Kate is released and greeted outside by Jim and Joe. Meanwhile, Wendy returns to Denmore’s house, with Sarah and Joe suggesting she get Denmore outside for at least ten minutes. Jim and Kate enter the apartment and begin looking around, but the place is already trashed. Jim questions Kate about her relationship with Kasimir, before she suggests checking his coat.

Wendy successfully gets Denmore out of the house, while Sarah and Joe enter. Joe discovers a remote control under the floorboards of Denmore’s bedroom. He begins working to dismantle it. At the same time, Denmore reminisces about duty. After successfully dismantling the remote, Lambe returns it and the pair escape the house, before Denmore and Wendy return.

Alan discusses the detonator, which the team suggests must have belonged to the Red Army, since it is likely too sophisticated for the IRA. Alan discusses his debt with Daddy and pays his gratitude. Jim and Katie chat with one of the workers at the bathhouse, where Kasimir was killed in an attempt to recover his coat. The woman returns his coat to them. They discover a note inside, which turns out to a letter from his sister. When Joe reads the letter, they discover it contains instructions for a drop. We also discover that Joe’s Russian is awful. Ah! The letter mentions Phoenix, which prompts Joe to set a trap for the mole.

Jim, Joe and Kate setup the trap and prepare to trap Phoenix. Next, Sarah and Joe track Denmore to the docks, where they believe he is meeting someone, who turns out to be Blakefield. A transaction is made, before the pair attempt to kill Denmore for being military. Sarah is shot and Denmore makes his escape with the bag full of explosives.

When the show returns, the team is on the search for Denmore, with the bomb set to detonate the following day. Sarah talks with Alan and reveals she hasn’t been shot. He finally admits to finding her birth control pills and says he has been fearing the end of their marriage. Despite Alan’s fears, Sarah denies having another lover and insists she doesn’t want to bring a child into this messed up world.

Meanwhile, Philip works on his detonator and discovers it has been tampered with. Meanwhile, Joe, Jim and Kate initiate the plan to capture Phoenix. Jim is distraught, when he discovers the identity of Phoenix and calls Joe, as the plan suggests. The team discovers that Alan Montag is the mole. He is immediately interrogated by Bobby, while everyone else listens in.

Alan says he believes in the cause deeply and refuses to give up any information. Daddy receives wortd that Denmore has called the hospital in search of Grace and makes contact with Wendy. Denmore tells her that people are going to say he is a murderer, but she shouldn’t believe it and says he is trying to save lives. Philip suggests he is going to have to die for the cause and to set off the bomb. Meanwhile, Joe interview Alan and offers him one more chance to speak.

Alan listens to Philip’s phone call and recognizes the street preacher. Joe rushes out to Philip’s location, while Wendy keeps him on the phone. When the police arrive near the scene, Philip realizes Grace is an agent. A bomb detonates and blows the windows out of a building, as Joe arrives too late. The End is Nigh sign rests at Joe’s feet.

Daddy tells Joe that Alan attempted to warn him, but he thought he was talking about Joe. Daddy has to speak with the Prime Minister. Sarah questions Joe about Alan, who is going to be moved tonight. When Sarah returns home, she is confronted by Odin (Yevgeni Sitokhin). It seems she is a mole as well.

Review

Wow! There definitely were some intense moments in this episode and some very stunning revelations. I definitely didn’t see Alan as the mole, but was Sarah to? On the flip side, the street preacher and is “End is Nigh” sign was fun. Wendy’s relationship with Denmore also helped the episode tremendously. Of course, Tom Hughes continues stealing the spotlight, as the calm and collected Joe Lambe.

Another solid episode and I cannot wait to check out the finale. This episode deserves an 8.5 out of 10.
