Gotham: Welcome Back, Jim Gordon Review

When the show opens, Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) is transported to an abandoned torture chamber, where she meets her torturer Bob (Michael Eklund, Bates Motel). Next, James (Ben McKenzie) and Bullock (Donal Logue) meet up and begin investigating a homicide. James is introduced to Detective Arnold Flass (Dash Mihok), who seems to know Bullock quite well. They’re introduced to the deceased, Pinky Littlefield from the Uptown Assassins. James finds a hidden compartment in the dead man’s shoes, while Bullock finds a witness. The pair interview Leon Winkler (Willie C. Carpenter), who agrees to head to the station to work with a sketch artist.

While waiting for the sketch artist, Leon is killed violently. Edward Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) investigates the homicide. The wounds are the same as the previous victim. Bob continues to work on Fish, as he attempts to get an apology out of her. Butch Gilzean (Drew Powell) is able to escape and kill his captors. After Bullock and James argue over a potential murderous cop, Bruce Wayne (Davis Mazouz) drives with Alfred, in hopes of finding Selina Kyle (Carmen Bicondova). The pair run into Ivy Pepper (Clare Foley), who agrees to tell Selina that Bruce is looking for her.

During the torture, Butch rushes in, attacks Bob and rescues Fish. Meanwhile, Gordon interviews the other police officers to no avail. After a little convincing, Gordon gets a name, Derek Delaware (Niko Nicotera, Sons of Anarchy). Derek attempts to escape, but Gordon is able to stop his car. When he checks the trunk, he discovers the same thing he found in Littlefield’s boot. Gordon shows the drugs to Sarah Essen (Zabryna Guevara) and Flass, but they suggest he is risking a NARC operation, with his actions. Flass is assigned the murder.

Nygma pays a visit to Kristen Kringle (Chelsea Spack). He attempts to impress her with a greeting card, but ends up freaking her out. Fish wakes up and is nursed by Butch. Fish insists she isn’t going anywhere, until she kills Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor). Next, we see Oswald Cobblepot, who shows off the club to his mother. Bullock tells Gordon that Flass has been busting drug dealers and taking over their stash house. He also insists Flass is protected and recommends Gordon let it go.

Bullock and Gordon raid a stash house, where they find Delaware. Delaware shows Gordon a warrant to seize the drugs from the warehouse. Back at the station, Essen informs Bullock and Gordon that Internal Affairs declared Leon Winkler’s death a suicide. Essen urges Gordon to move on to the next victim. Next, Flass and the boys hang out with Kristen Kringle and make fun of Nygma’s card, when Nygma enters. After a little more harassment, Nygma leaves in a hurry.

Jim meets up with Oswald. Gordon attempts to gain information about Flass. Oswald agrees to help and that nobody will get hurt. Victor Zsasz (Anthony Carrigan) goes to the torture chamber, where he finds Bob beaten on the floor and Fish gone. He finishes off Bob. Next, Oswald gets drunk and enjoys the club, when Fish and Butch enter. Afterwards, Selina visits Bruce, who gives her a snow globe. Bruce offers Selina a place to stay, but Selina insists Bruce stop hassling and bugging her. She recants her earlier testimony of seeing his parent’s murderer, before fleeing. Oswald’s henchman, Gabe (Alex Corrado) holds Delaware at gunpoint to get information on Flass

Meanwhile, Owsald offers to join forces with Fish, but his offer only insults her. Oswald admits to working for Falcone the entire time, before Victor enters and a shootout ensues. One of Victor’s women is killed, before Butch and Fish flee, with Victor and crew in pursuit. Butch helps Fish out of a window, before confronting Victor and being shot.

Next, Nygma is at work, when Kristen enters. Kristen apologizes and admits she enjoyed the card. Nygma begins to ask Kristen out, but she stops him and flees. Gabe gives Gordon the evidence he needs to bring down Flass, including a confession from Delaware and the icepick. Next, Alfred attempts to comfort a crying Bruce. Gordon confronts Flass about the murder, but Flass insists the other officers aren’t going to let it happen.

Gordon states his case and arrests Flass, with the help of Essen. Fish meets with Bullock at the Port of Gotham. Fish insists on leaving town, before coming back and killing Penguin. She tasks Bullock with helping Butch. The pair kiss, before Bullock drives away. Gordon runs into Delaware on the street. Delaware questions about Gabe and his safety. He begs Gordon to keep his wife and kids out of it.

Review

The newest episode of Gotham had some excellent moments, but it was also plagued with a few that felt lackluster. For instance, Butch’s escape seemed far too easy, while Fish’s torture started out good, but ended too quickly. On the other hand, the shootout with Victor was anything, but exciting. It was fairly obvious the murderer was Flass from the beginning.

However, the episode also hit some high notes. It is nice to see Cory Michael Smith’s Nygma finally coming together. Nygma may very well offer another character for fans to cheer for, aside from Penguin. Gordon teaming up with Oswald was effective and showed that all actions in Gotham have consequences. The episode scores a 7 out of 10.
