Gotham: The Blind Fortune Teller Review

Gotham - The Blind Fortune Teller S1.E16

At the beginning of the episode, Barbara Kean (Erin Richards) returns home, only to find Selina (Camren Bicondova) and Ivy Pepper (Clare Foley). Of course, Jim is out and about, at the circus, with Leslie Thompkins (Morena Baccarin). The pair watch the clowns and the Flying Graysons, before a fight breaks out. Gordon (Ben McKenzie) attempts to calm the commotion. Meanwhile, Oswald Cobblepot’s (Robin Lord Taylor) mom is insulted, at his own club. He handles it with a little bloodshed.

James interviews and interrogates the circus workers, with little success. Leslie has better luck and discovers the Lloyd family hates the Grayson family and vice versa. Leslie and James attempt to find the snake dancer, Lyla, but only get her son, Jerome (Cameron Monaghan). At Gordon’s orders, the snake is released and guides them to Lyla’s dead body. The Ringmaster (James Monroe Iglehart) insists she was dead, when they found her.

Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) explains to the other prisoners that they’re being used, as transplant donors. She insists she has a plan, which could potentially free some of them, but they have to follow her carefully. After a pep talk, the prisoners seem prepared for anything. The Ringmaster is arrested. At the station, Jerome is questioned, by Gordon. He explains his mother has some boyfriends, but thats about it. Gordon and Bullock uncover the storied history, behind the family feud. Fish and her fellow prisoners finally stand up to their captors.

Gotham Paul Cicero

Fish attempts to get personal, with her captor. She requests some supplies from one of her prisoners. Fish orders her followers to beat the prisoner. After the beating ends, Fish demands 60 crates of water, thirty blankets. Fish demands the manager to come and see her, before their captors leave empty handed. Meanwhile Gordon, explains the situation to Sarah Essen (Zabryna Guevara), before Edward Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) enters and gives them the cause of death. Afterwards, a psychic, Paul Cicero (Mark Margolis) enters and tells them Lila was an old friend of him. Paul offers them a message from the grave, which says the servant of the devil lies in the garden of the Iron Sisters.

Next, Alfred (Sean Pertwee) informs Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) he is set to meet, with the board of Wayne Enterprises the next day. Alfred suggests this is a bad idea, but Bruce is committed to the cause. Oswald plays the piano, at his club, while Barbara dresses up for Ivy and Selina. They suggest dressing up like she’s not trying to impress Jim, who is seen having a romantic dinner, with Lee. After a little contemplating, Lee discovers the psychic’s message was referring to the Arkham Bridge. Despite a little arguing from Jim, the pair head to the bridge, in the dark, with flashlights. During their search, the pair find a hatchet, which has the letters THFC on it. Jim insists it is The Hellfire Club, which is a Satanic cult.

Gotham The Joker

The pair meet with Cicero, who insists he was only passing on a message. Jim accuses Cicero of having someone plant the hatchet, before suggesting he is protecting someone. Jerome is brought in. Jim suggests Jerome killed his mother and is actually Cicero’s son. Of course, the pair deny it. Jerome eventually comes clean and admits to being Jerome’s father. After a few fake tears, Jerome begins to insult his mother. In between fits of laughter, Jerome admits to killing his mother, because she was nagging him.

Afterwards, Barbara catches Jim and Lee making out. Penguin is confronted, by Victor Zsasz (Anthony Carrigan), who insists Falcone thinks Penguin is messing up the club. Butch (Drew Powell) appears behind Oswald, which startles him. Victor insists he has brainwashed Butch into being his puppet. With that, Butch is set to help Oswald, with his club. Bruce meets with the the board of Wayne Enterprises. Bruce brings up his two main concerns, underworld involvement in the Arkham project and the manufacture of chemical weapons at one of their facilities. The board members suggests Bruce is only relying on rumors.

Bruce suggests he’ll be bringing up the issues at the next shareholder’s meeting, with a view of possible legal action. Fish gets what she wants. The man, who finally reveals his name, as Thomas, agrees to stay, with the prisoners. Fish leaves Thomas (Elliot Villar) behind to deal with her new comrades.

Review

Although some of the Fish Mooney moments were a little cheesy and cringe worthy, the episode was pretty good. We finally found our Joker in Cameron Monaghan, who played the part pretty well. On the other hand, it was nice to see what happened to Butch, but his presence and Fish’s escape seem to be setting up a show down in the future. The love triangle with Barbara, Jim and Lee is underwhelming, at times, and could be ignored altogether, without losing anything impactful. The episode deserves a 7.5 out of 10.
