Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce: Episode 3 Review

GG2D Review

In the latest episode of Bravo’s Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, Jake (Paul Adelstein) spends the night with the kids, which gives Abby (Lisa Edelstein) a crazy night out with the girls.

When the show opens, Jake comes over to get Charlie (Dylan Schombing) and Lilly (Conner Dwelly). Jake agrees to a long list of rules, including not letting Becca come over, when the kids are home. Next, Abby meets with Phoebe (Beau Garrett) and Lyla (Janeane Garofalo). She tells them about her meeting with Jake. Lyla reveals she is volunteering at school, since Dan (Michael Weaver) is trying to get full custody of the kids. Meanwhile, Max (Patrick Heusinger) helps Jake turn his home into a fun zone for the kids. They run into Jake’s eccentric neighbor, Emcee (Marco Soriano).

The girls tell Abby spending the first night alone, without the kids, can be terrible, but she doesn’t seem worried. She already has the whole night planned, with a nice bath. Lyla heads to work and confronts Delia (Necar Zadegan), who has rearranged a key meeting, because Lyla has to be at the school. Meanwhile, Abby meets with her editor, Melissa (Shannon Chan-Kent), and pitches some new book ideas. Of course, Melissa says sales are way down and the Girlfriends’ Guide series is dead. Since Abby has no income, Melissa pitches her an idea on menopause.

Back at home, Abby attempts to work on her book, but fails miserably, before she receives a gift at the door and a video message on her phone. Meanwhile, Jake and Becca (Julianna Guill) share a moment and Becca offers some medication to help calm Jake’s nerves, but he refuses. Next, Lyla meets with Barry Juck (Adam Korson), who happens to be a big shot in Hollywood. Abby continues drinking, while struggling to write. Meanwhile, Jake has dinner with the kids. Jake suggests going bowling, but Charlie is more interested in the Xbox and Lilly is glued to her phone. The neighbors begin fighting next door. Abby has hit rockbottom, as she dances in her bra and panties in front of an uncovered window.

Max attempts to have dinner with his husband, Ford (J. August Richards), but is interrupted by a phone call from Jake. Meanwhile, Jake struggles to get everything together, but it is quickly turning into a disaster. Abby continues to sink lower, before calling Lyla and confessing her true feelings to the voice mail. A drunken Abby finally fixes the window, but gets her fingers stuck in the process. Did I mention she is basically nude, besides her panties and some Sharpie marks across her breasts?

An EMT named Wayne saved the day and frees Abby, as Phoebe and Lyla arrive. Jake introduces the kids to Becca, who offers to take the kids bowling. This time, the kids jump on the opportunity. Max discovers Jake has committed the ultimate crime.  While Ford is upset with Max for sneaking in a phone call, he is excited at the possibility of getting to meet Becca Riley. Back with Abby, the girls try to comfort her, but he discovers Lilly has posted pictures with Becca on her Instagram page.

While the girls deface Becca’s poster, Jake grows fearful, after he discovers Lilly posted the pictures to her Instagram page. Abby realizes she is in trouble, because what she did begins to sink in. The girls hit the town, while Jake attempts to get Max to help him cover up his crime. Abby is able to find a new Becca Riley poster, but it is written in a foreign language. Lyla admits she can use Delia to obtain a poster, but it will come back to haunt her in the future. Delia shows up with the poster, which Abby hangs on Lilly’s wall.

Jake returns the kid homes and is confronted by an angry Abby. Lilly takes down the poster and wishes to hang a picture of her and Becca above her bed. So much for Abby’s struggles to find another poster. Lilly suggests Abby is jealous of Becca and Jake. Meanwhile, Max tries to comfort Abby, as the pair direct traffic at the school. an obviously late Lyla runs into the school and joins Dan.

Lyla is confronted for sending her nanny to story time. She insists Juanita (Maria J. Cruz) is a great story teller. Lyla goes off about her job and expenses. She storms off angrily, while Abby works to fix the window. When she thinks it is fixed, she plays on her phone, but the window slams shut.

Review

Overall, this was a fun episode. There were a few emotional moments, especially when Abby was left alone at home. Of course, she freaked out, got drunk and made a complete fool of herself. Maybe the show would be more impactful, if it took itself a little more seriously? On Jake’s side, it was amusing to watch him struggle to bond with the kids. Thankfully, Becca saved the day. Of course, Ford’s love for Becca was likely the highlight. The episode deserves a 6.5 out of 10.
