Frontera Review

Frontera is a 2014 drama, which explores America’s immigration problem. The movie starts with Miguel (Michael Pena) and Jose (Michael Ray Escamilla) attempting to cross the border into America, in order to secure word, since Miguel’s wife, Paulina (Eva Longoria), is pregnant. Along the way, they run into Olivia (Amy Madigan), who happens to be the former sheriff’s, Roy (Ed Harris), wife.

After the pair split ways, a group of youngsters perk on top of the mountain, with a rifle. After a little arguing, Sean (Seth Adkins), Brad (Evan Adrian) and Kevin (Tony Ford) end up spotting the Mexicans and firing shots at them, in hopes of scaring them and forcing them back across the border. Of course, Olivia enters the scene, is knocked off her horse and eventually succumbs to her wounds. Before Olivia dies, Roy shows up and scares Miguel away.

After Olivia’s death, we’re introduced to the new sheriff, Randall Hunt (Aden Young, Rectify), who takes over the investigation. Eventually, Jose and Miguel are arrested at separate times. Meanwhile, Paulina is forced to make a decision. In her desperation, she hooks up with a coyote, who is corrupt and attempts to hold her for ransom money.

At the same time, Roy goes on the offensive and begins searching for evidence regarding the murder. During Roy’s he finds bullet cartridges and shell casings, which lead back to Sean, who turns out to be Randall’s son. With this type of pressure on Randall, he is forced to make a decision. Will he be able to give up his own son or will he have to sweep everything under the rug? Will Roy be able to help Miguel and Paulina reunite outside in the free world? Will justice be served?

Review

All in all, Frontera is an emotional thrill ride that keeps pulling out twists and turns, until the very end. The pacing is perfect and helps to keep the viewer guessing what is going to come next. The viewers will experience one emotion after another, as the film rolls on, as it becomes difficult not to sympathize with each of the characters.

The cast is fantastic. Ed Harris is a veteran and performed wonderfully, as the former sheriff. Michael Pena has also been around the game for awhile and fit the role perfectly. Of course, Aden Young pulled off his role with perfection and even nailed the accent.

At the end of the day, I watched the film for Aden Young, but I enjoyed all actors and their performances. The movie was definitely political, but should be overlooked, if you’re willing to explore an emotional film from both sides of the border. The movies deserves a 7 out of 10.
