The Ascension finale wrapped up a lot of loose ends, while leaving the viewer grasping for answers. When the episode begins, Viondra Denninger (Tricia Helfer) reads the results of the computer software, which grants couples the right be married. While Samantha Krueger (Lauren Lee Smith) believes this to be rigged, Martin Carillo (Mark Camacho) insists the results are received based on a mathematic formula. Either way, the results cause problems, as Duke Vanderhaus (Ryan Robbins) is set to wed Emily (Tiffany Lonsdale), which upsets Aaron Gault (Brandon P Bell). During the process, a video is shown, which shows the Captain (Brian Van Holt) having sex with Lorelei Wright (Amanda Thomson).

The mood on Ascension quickly begins to change, as Aaron and Duke come to blows. On the other hand, Councilman Rose (Al Sapienza) works to claim the Captain’s chair for himself. At the same time, Samantha grows tired of Harris Enzmann (Gil Bellows) and helps Katherine Warren (Wendy Crewson) take over his spot. Of course, Samantha is set on exposing the truth about Ascension, which results in her attempting to help Stokes (Brad Carter) escape. While the pair are able to escape the complex, Samantha is shot in the side. Warren prepares to have Harris removed from the equation, which allows her to assume his position. Despite his begs and pleads, he is hauled off.

Back in Ascension, Gault and Duke fight on the beach. Christa Valis (Ellie O’Brien) sees Lorelei and follows her, which leads her to the beach. When she sees the fight, she uses her mind to emit electricity and blast Duke. Of course, her actions cause Ascension to lose all power. Since restoring power and gaining access to Christa requires Harris’ help, Warren spares his life for a little while longer.

Despite Rose’s attempts, William and Viondra remain in power. Everything on Ascension is in complete disarray. The ship is quickly losing oxygen, which forces William and Gault to go on a rescue mission. While the Captain is away, Viondra is given leadership. Warren admits she doesn’t care about anyone on the ship, besides Christa. She sends an operative into Ascension, in order to evacuate the girl. Harris is able to break away from Warren and Martin, which allows him to contact Robert (John Ralston). He informs Robert he needs to protect Christa and someone is coming for her.

Meanwhile, the captain and Aaron come up with a plan to restore oxygen to the ship. They head deep into the ship. During their mission, Aaron spots Lorelei and gives chase. At the same time, Robert and Christa stand in front of some doors, as Christa insists someone is coming for her and they will emerge from the doors ahead. Robert urges her to flee, before admitting to killing Lorelei, in order to prevent her from ruining everything.

After Stokes and Samantha has treated her wound, Samantha makes contact with Eva Marceau (Aliyah O’Brien). Samantha meets with her and brings her back to the motel, where Eva introduces herself to Stokes. During their conversation, Samantha finds it peculiar that Eva knew where Stokes worked on the ship, which tells her Eva is working for Harris. It is too late. Eva kills Samantha, takes a picture and begins hunting for Stokes, who has disappeared.

Back in Ascension, Warren’s operative emerges from the door and disables Robert, before he attempts to abduct Christa. Of course, Aaron follows Lorelei to Christa and immediately attacks the operative. As Christa watches, she again uses her power, which makes both of the men vanish. Meanwhile, Harris pushes Warren down into the hole and kills her. He tells Martin that Warren had an accident and that those above Ascension are going to space.

Meanwhile, Stokes continues to run from Eva. He makes it to the waterline, where he stares at the city’s skyline. Meanwhile, Aaron Gault awakes and finds himself in an unfamiliar location.

Review


The first portion of the finale was slow and un-meaningful. Things really started to pick up in the later half, when the unnecessary sex and relationship angle was dropped. Instead, we got to focus on the things that matters, Christa, Gault, Stokes and Ascension. Finally, we were led to a thrilling ending, which will definitely leave the viewer begging for more.

All in all, I enjoyed Ascension, but it could have been so much more. The biggest problem with the show is the amount of clutter packaged in the final product. There were many characters, who were nothing but dead weight, including Presley, Jackie and James. Even Duke and Emily felt pointless at times. If the worthless sex and pointless relationships were cut, the show could have been more impactful, with hour episodes. Instead, the show felt slow and bogged down with meaningless content.

Although not perfect, Ascension was definitely a fun watch, especially the finale. The show has a future, with the Stokes, Gault and Christa story lines. However, the rest should be limited. The Ascension finale deserves a 7.5 out of 10.
