Anne with an E Series 1 Episode 5 Recap

As the 5th episode begins, Anne (Amybeth McNulty) participates in a spelling bee at school. It comes down to Anne and Gilbert Blythe (Lucas Jade Zumann). Anne emerges as the winner, but she begins feeling strange a short time later. In the morning, Anne finds her sheets covered with blood. Marilla (Geraldine James) finds her downstairs trying to clean up the mess. Marilla lets Anne know that she is now a woman. Matthew (R.H. Thomson) enters and is quickly run out of the home. Marilla offers to let Anne stay home from school, but she refuses. Meanwhile, Gilbert prepares for school. He tells his father, John (Wayne Best), that Mrs. Kincannon will be there soon enough. Gilbert spots her as he leaves homes. He tells Mrs. Kincannon that he will have her wages soon. While Anne is aware, Marilla speaks with Rachel (Corrine Koslo) about her situation.

They tell Anne about a girl that had an accident and it ran through. She becomes frightened that the same will happen to her. With a little luck, Anne makes it through the day without any trouble. Nevertheless, she still believes it has been the worst day ever. Anne and Gilbert get into a little spat after school ends. After Anne returns home, she tells Marilla about her terrible day. Then, she refuses to eat supper. Marilla cheers her up by agreeing to let her have Diana over for tea. Marilla heads for Rachel’s and Matthew heads into town. Anne makes sure that everything is just perfect before her friend arrives. Meanwhile, Gilbert reads to his father. Matthew makes it into town and enters the dress shop. He exits very quickly.

We learn that Matthew had a crush on Jeannie and gave her a button when he was still in school. We also learn a little about his brother, Michael, and his passing. Before too long, Matthew heads back home. Marilla finishes helping Rachel can the food. Anne and Diana continue cutting up. Mrs. Eliza Barry (Helen Johns) enters and catches Diana and Anne playing around. They’re taken downstairs and scolded by Eliza and Marilla.

The teacher separates Anne and Diana. During a break, they exchange a lock and promise to never forget one another. After class ends, the teacher instructs Anne to take Gilbert his assignments. She reluctantly agrees to do so. Once she arrives, she is introduced to Gilbert’s father. He compliments her red hair, before Gilbert arrives. John heads back inside on his own. Gilbert thanks Anne for bringing his assignments.

Anne with an E Review

Anne with an E has become one of my favorite shows. Each episode is spectacular in its own right. Each has been filled with humor and emotion. And, each episode has forced Anne to face yet another challenge. The characters are all very dynamic. This episode told us a little more about Matthew, his childhood and his brother. We also learned a little about Gilbert and his sick father. It is truly a shame that each episode is so short. Nevertheless, the series has been excellent. I cannot wait for the next episode!

The episode scores an 8 out of 10. Catch up with previous recaps of Anne with an E now!
