A Walk Among The Tombstones Review

A Walk Among The Tombstones is a crime/thriller that debuted on September 29, 2014.

Matt Scudder (Liam Neeson) is a detective that is investigating the murder of Leila Alvarez (Laura Birn). Her husband, Kenny Kristo (Dan Stevens), just happens to be in a nearby cafe, across the street from their apartment and see three men in a van kidnap her. When Matt goes to see him, at his apartment, he finds out that he is a hardened drug dealer.

Matt continues digging into the case and returns to the cemetery, where Leila’s body was found in garbage bags floating on top of a pond. He speaks to one of the caretakers, Jonas Loogan (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson), who denies having anything to do with Leila’s murder.

Matt gets a helping hand from TJ (Brian “Astro” Bradley), who is suffering from sickle cell anemia. His mother is a drug addict that wanders around the streets trying to get a fix. Matt reveals to TJ that he also has a checkered past because he accidentally shot and killed a seven year old girl, when he tried to intervene in a robbery.

Matt finds Jonas’s hideaway, which is located on top of his mother’s apartment building. There he finds polaroids of Leila standing in front of her apartment window. He confides in Matt that he was involved in the kidnapping of Leila, but not the actual murder. Afterwards he commits suicide by jumping off the building.

Scudder returns to Kenny’s apartment to ask him some more questions about Leila’s kidnapping. He admits to knowing that she was kidnapped and was given a ransom demand of one million dollars, but could only come up with a portion of the money so the kidnappers killed her.

Another girl, Lucia (Danielle Rose Russell) is kidnapped and Matt tries to assist in getting the girl back. He demands to meet face to face with the kidnapper, Ray (David Harbour), at the Greenwood Cemetery. Will Matt be able to save Lucia from clutches of her kidnappers and see her safely back into the hands of her father? Will TJ and Matt help each other overcome their dark pasts and see hope for a brighter future, together?

Review

If you like crime movies about kidnappings and serial killers, you will like a Walk Among The Tombstones. Liam Neeson is highly noted for acting in these types of movies. It starts out like a drama and turns into a thriller near the end, which adds a surprise twist for the viewer. This film is definitely not filled with mind blowing twists but it does have some dark moments. Liam is good at what he does and he does a great job of keeping you tuned into the movie. Astro also did a great job in his role, even though he doesn’t have very much experience in acting. The pace is slow at times, but it can be tolerated because you are so intensely focused on what is going to happen next.

A Walk Among The Tombstones is definitely worth watching especially if you are a fan of Liam Neeson. It is questionable where TJ comes to play in this film, but he does offer a little fun into such a grim movie. I feel that it deserves a 7 out of 10.
